General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Luke eyed the man just arriving and notice the damage to his jacket. *perfect, now I can get up to date on events without having to wait for the inevitable Galnet Article*

He ordered two whiskies on the rocks and upon recieving them wandered over to sit next to the man, taking note of the dreadlocked woman who was now talking in hushed tones. *great, trouble's brewing and I just got here*,

Placing a drink in front of the man, "Rough day?" He asked. "I know the drinks are free but it's polite to get one anyways"

Xeknos had scarcely noticed the exodus from the bar - it wasn't until he looked up to flag down a nearby waitress that he noticed that the bar had begun to fill again, and had even added a few extra people. With a shrug, he ordered a second (or was it third? He has lost count) of scotch, then went back to fiddling with his PDA.

Locke nods at Marra, the hushed conversation finished, before suddenly and sharply rising from his seat.

"Well, that works, I'm going to get another drink while they're still free, you want anything, Marra? Pegasi Moon, another Blue? Nevermind, i'll just pick up both."

He eventually makes his way over to the bar, standing next to the man who had payed for the bar's drinks for the night.
After having the drinks laid out on the bar in front of him, he lightly smacked the man who had paid the barman in diamonds on the back.

"Well done mate, class act, paying for everyone's drinks like that. Why don't you come and knock back a few with me and my friend over there?"

Locke gestures over to the booth where Marra is waiting.

Cartlidge noticed a man he didn’t recognize approach him. His hand instinctively made its way into his right pocket, but otherwise he made no threatening gestures. He was in no mood to get into another fight.

As he passed the drink to him as asked his question, Cartlidge subtly scanned the drink with his eye and thought. He doubted it was poisoned, but one never could be too cautious. The man seemed more curious than even he was. It was funny, if not suspicious, so he decided to entertain the man.

“Had a bit of a misunderstanding with someone at the docks. We both thought the one was planning on drawing a weapon on the other and to make matters worse, pilots kept entering the area, think ‘Oh shit! Someone’s going to draw their weapon!’ and they’d reach for their own. Before we knew it, a crowd of pilots had formed, everyone either watching from the sidelines or trying to get in the middle of the mess.”

He took a brief moment to take his right hand out and offer it to the man. “I’m Cartlidge, by the way, Jacob Cartlidge.”  As he said this, he watched another man walk across the room from where the woman and her guard were sitting. He hadn't even noticed that they were still here.
07 Sep 2016, 8:56pm
"Pleasure's all mine Mr Cartlidge. Call me Luke" He reached over and took the mans hand. "I did wonder what all that commotion was. Someone mentioned a grenade was thrown? That what happened to your jacket?"

Looking over to where Cartlidge was looking he saw someone leave the dreadlocked woman and her hulk. "Friend of yours?"

Muninn overheard the man attending with Marra. "She's recruiting rapid boss. What the hell is happening?"

Heathen gulped a mouthful of his Pegasi Moon. "Keep ya head down and don't draw attention kid. If it was trouble one, we ain't cops. Two, we have an Inquisitor standing right next to us, we'll be fine. And three, I might be able to bring down her muscle with my axe. That's a solid maybe though."

"Great." Muninn shook his head an drank his whiskey. "PMC farming recruits and under hand deals, and we can't do anything as military? Stupid boundary laws."

Slapping Muninn cheek playfully Heathen tutted. "Much to learn kid. That woman is dangerous and you wouldn't want to tangle with Black Omega outside Imperial space, even I see that as suicide."
07 Sep 2016, 9:51pm
Noticing the man turn to look he gave him a quick shove to redraw his attention. Cartlidge started to wonder if he was new to the piloting business, or rather, if he had spent any time around a more dangerous crowd.
"No I have no idea who they are, but I've spent enough time as a bounty hunter to tell the size of a fish at a single glance, and the woman back there has trouble written all over her." He glanced back to the burns on his jacket. "Yeah the man I had an issue with dropped one. I'm convinced it was an accident but accidental grenades still go off. Ironically he ended up taking the worst of it, so he's being patched up in the medical ward now."

He started to stare off for a moment. "Hope he doesn't have a grudge. I'm not a fan of making enemies when I don't have to."

He then looked back to Luke, finally noticing the various pins he displayed rather brazenly. "He outranked me?" Cartlidge thought.

"What kind of profession do you have, Luke?" He asked.
07 Sep 2016, 10:13pm
Luke flared up slightly at being shoved so brazenly, but it quickly passed as he heeded Cartlidges warning.

"Accidental eh? Lucky you only lost a sleeve". Luke took a sip of his whisky and let it sit in his mouth briefly, savouring the taste before swallowing.

"I don't really have a particular profession, I do whatever entertains me and try not to get the authorities on my ass. I just so happen to have done lots of it all. Except piracy, never could be bothered with it, seems like too much work for often too little reward don't you think?" He pondered out loud.

"What about yourself? What does a fine entrepeneur such as yourself like to partake in, when he's not nearly getting his arm taken off anyway" Luke chuckled to himself. *Seems a friendly chap, bit suspicious at first, understandable...* he thought

Cartlidge nodded as the man explained himself. "I actually hunt pirates for a living." He said in a moderately hushed tone before taking a drink of his whisky. "I asked because I wanted to give you advice. As a rule of thumb I don't try to draw the attention of anyone I don't particularly feel like fighting, or rather, people I'm not sure I could win a fight against. I've seen half a dozen people look back at the woman over there in curiosity, and each time that tank of a man gets more and more agitated. That's why I nudged you just now."

He took another drink. "But then again I'm also under the impression that she doesn't want to cause a scene either."
07 Sep 2016, 10:35pm
"Decent enough profession." Luke raises his glass as a toast to the man. "Actually, I considered talking to her about something... But maybe you're a better, or at least, nicer person to show it to." Luke slid his hand into his pocket and pulled out his PDA, flicking the screen on to display the photo of the alien wreckage he encountered.

"What do you make of this?" He said as he slid it across to Cartlidge.

"I wasn't the first to find it, and I doubt I'll be the last, but I will place my Pilots licence in a bet that either the Imps or Feds will be cordoning off this place soon enough. Then either hush it up, or claim sovereignty over it. Either way, it won't be publicly available for long."
07 Sep 2016, 11:49pm
Cartlidge looked at the image and recognized the wreckage from Pleiades. He had actually visited the site himself hours after the discovery was first made. It was a curious sight indeed.

"I actually saw the site personally. Fascinating structure. A lot of people think it's ancient but I'm betting it's fresh." He took another drink. "And I agree. After what happened in Merope it's only a matter of time before someone starts gutting it for parts. Have you heard the rumors of Fed's carting off unknown probes to some unknown destination recently? Maybe that's where they're coming from."
08 Sep 2016, 5:24am
Coragon just had emptied his second glass of Red as someone came over, fetched some drinks and invited him to sit with his buddies.

Glancing over into the direction the man was mentioning he could make out two more people, one of them being the big guy and what seemed to be a woman.

He grinned.

"Isn't it always the same? The moment you start to toss wealth about, everyone suddenly becomes your friend. The moment you hit rock bottom, said friends disperse faster then one can blink..."

He ordered and promptly received his 3rd and 4th glass of Red and rose to his feet.

"But alright, let's see what your friends are like. The moment things get to start uncomfortable however I'm out. I'm here for to get some stuff sorted and don't need more problems. Lead on."
08 Sep 2016, 10:30am
"Really? Hmm.... Well that's interesting." Luke exclaimed, taking his cap off and laying it on the bar. He ran his fingers through his shoulder length dark hair and thought to himself for a moment. Taking his last sip of whisky he signalled to the Bartender for another pint before swiveling his stool so he could lean his back against the bar. "Figures though. They'll want to grab everything they can at this point."

Luke nodded and smiled at the man now making his way across the room towards the woman, taking care not to be perceived to be watching this time. He took his PDA and started flicking through the screens, looking for nothing in particular.
08 Sep 2016, 11:25am
After taking another drink, Cartlidge decided to add one last note. "Personally I want to know what brought the thing down in the first place. I did some research on Thargoids a while back, and I'm not saying that's what the wreck is, because it very well could be something entirely different, but they weren't known to fly ships that could be taken out that easily."
08 Sep 2016, 11:37am
Luke nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I'd heard rumour of those Thargoid things. Nasty little buggers from what I'd heard." Luke thought hard for a minute.... "Who's to say it was brought down by something else though? I saw no blast marks, or any exterior damage to suggest it was in a fight. You ask me? I say it was a pilot error, plain and simple. Tried landing too hard or just pushed his fuel limit too far. We've all been there, why act like aliens are immune to such mistakes?"

Luke chuckled to himself as he thought of something else to add, "Reminds me of that old 20th Century film, what was it. The one where aliens came down to blow up Earth in these huge big discs, had that Black actor, William Smith? Didn't he make an alien ship crash in that?"
