But Lifter was a... "standalone" ship, a small freighter with some... Hyperjump... If you could squeeze the drive inside... :p
I do think we have Hauler for it's role now.

I miss the utility ships that Elite 2 had. I think I remember Tugs, Cargo shunts, and station to surface shuttles. The player could buy all of them if they wanted right?
I'm gonna go check now, ya got me interested.

No, as far as I remember. But there was Lifter and Interplanetary Shuttle (or last one was in FE only?.. Can't recall now)

Oh come on now!

Elite Frontier calls it an interplanetary shuttle. I call it a box for looking at much more famous ship as inspirational basking music plays.

That looks more silly than the Tarsus from Privateer.

Ah, it was in Elite Frontier too. I've played both Frontier and First Encounters, so memory may be a little messed up.

Nice little box for doing nothing except hauling radioactive waste to dump it into the star and have some cheap chow on the table at the end of the day.

p.s. At least this lil Tarsus have something that looks like missiles, so maybe even some self-defence if not open combat... iShuttle was a box that had troubles with fitting hyperdrive into it. Can't recall, maybe it was impossible, maybe it was making it utterly useless, lowering the cargo cap to 0.
p.s.2. I'm not that old, just played Frontier and FE in early '10s, bc my first computer was a piece of trash.

Amata LireinFriendly reminder: Space, contrary to popular believe, is not a vacuum. Lots of hydrogen and deuterium out there, and depending on where you are in space its density differs. So in the long run a projectile will slow down to a stop... it would take faaaar longer then the game suggests though

Gravitational drag might be a bigger factor in slowing down projectiles. Density in the interstellar medium varies but 30% - 70% of it have a density of 10^-4 to 10^−2. It's well possible that a reasonably sized projectile might not be stopped by friction until after the end of our universe.

Well, you could fit a class 1 hyperdrive into the Lifter but... it ate up all cargospace

Well... You could still use it on non-cargo missions... COMBAT?!

Hay! I loved that Tarsus. Without its tiny tiny window, I never would have appreciated upgrading to the .. Orion and Centurian was it?
Gotta go look up Priveter now.

Pretty much chance for that projectile to end up falling on a star. Unlikely it'll have much speed to escape the star's gravity completely, and, if "combat zone" have it's own relative orbit speed (depends on closer bodies, etc...), then projectile, fired somewhere to the "retrograde" direction, have a chance to end up that way... After several millenias...

I was more of a fan of the Orion. It could take an absolute pounding and still get you home to tell the tale, plus you could fit a rear-mounted turret to remind people that you don't like being followed. I actually liked it more than the Centurion.

If I remember correctly the hyperdrive ate up so much space you couldn't even put in a mandatory 1t of fuel

Meaning there are countless tiny satellites just waiting to become shooting stars for children to wish upon.
Wishes from war, how very macabre.

The Orion reminded me of the X-Bomber from a Japanese marionette show I used to love as a kid called Star Fleet over here. Great looking ship.
The Centurion still holds up today as well. Both would make great additions to the Elite garage.

BTW, look up the Star Fleet US/UK theme if ya want a super cheese laugh. It's performed by Brian May of Queen and it's so embarrassing now. I flippin loved it as a nipper.

Edit:-

As it was a Japanese show, naturally the X-Bomber turned into a giant robot.
