Elite: General talk

Anadromous Is it purely how cold he is running that keeps the swarms from attacking him, or is there some other mechanic (like distance from the interceptor) here I'm not aware of? I was playing around trying to biopsy interceptors in Delphi yesterday. The main thing that killed me (over and over and over) was activation of the attack behaviour of the swarms. I was diligently keeping temperature below 20% (cold running DBX with heatsinks as I approached 15%), but there is no way I could have just flown through the centre of a swarm, like he does a couple of times.

I managed to sample Cyclops 3-4 times and a Basilisk once, then decided perhaps Ram Tah's second mission was going to be too much of a pain and went off to other things.

Thargon Swarms
General Swarm fire is inaccurate, particularly if you are running shieldless, and generally not a concern if the Interceptor is <Medusa. Your running temperature does not affect their accuracy either.
Swarms only fire missile Thargons (their true threat) when they are Agitated. To avoid agitating a swarm do not touch them. If you DO come in contact, and thus agitate the swarm, pass through the swarm again to reset them back to normal mode (it helps to do this immediately AFTER a missile barrage for increased safety).

Cold orbiting is done primarily to avoid the Interceptor's fire (Temp <25% and moving away from the center of its 15 degree firing arc). Ideally it is done in a direction that also avoids the swarm but stuff happens. You might have an easier time with a Long Range+Thermal Vent engineered Beam Laser to keep you cold.

Nah its one poor intern who got a printout of names and he has to edit the DB line by line. LOL

I first started on Xbox back when ED first came out. Didn't stay on it for long. Got caught up in other things. Got into ED on PC during the quarantine and absolutely loved it. Especially since I can play it with a full HOTAS setup. Also VR in ED is awesome. That all said I really wish they had first gotten cross platform play enabled on Horizons before bothering with Odyssey.

For anyone who has used a HOTAS setup, how long should I expect it to last before needing replacement (or potentially fix it myself)? For reference I have CH Products Pro Throttle and Fighterstick.

I've been using a Logitech Hotas for 1.5 years now, no issues.

This seems to vary depending on what you have and how you use it. Not many people seem to use CH products anymore. I don't have any experience with them so I can't speak for their longevity. Personally I use the Thrustmaster T16000M full flight setup (throttle, stick, rudder pedals). I got that back in 2017. I have over 1k hours in ED alone and that was all with using my HOTAS setup. I'm still using it today. Only issue I have so far is that I used to have yaw bound to the twist feature on the stick. That recently started bugging out and now falsely gives yaw input when I'm not twisting the stick. I tried changing dead zones, unplugging and plugging it back in, etc.... still have the problem. So in my case I just unbound the twist feature of the stick and actually started using the rudder pedals. Other than the twist feature bugging out, the rest of the setup still works without any other problems. But considering I have had my HOTAS setup for 5 years now, I'd say they are holding up well. If you decide you absolutely love using a HOTAS for ED and want to get a higher end setup, the T16000M is a good option. Logitech has the X56 which I hear a lot of praise for. If you want to go full on baller and get a high end setup, VIRPIL makes a rock solid setup (really expensive though).

I used to use HOTAS Thrustmaster X as for some odd reason that's the only one you can use on Elite: Dangerous on Xbox (why you can't use the more expensive thing sold with Ace Combat 7 is beyond me...) Now I play exclusively on the pad ever since I can't even afford to get a replacement for HOTAS. I have a constant strafe left issue and I tried every single thing from Frontier forums, Reddit, etc. but no avail.

I have CH Products for 8 years now. They still work fine.
Issues I've had with them:
  • The Pro Throttle had a manufacturing defect (somebody was fastening the handle cable to the wrong clip inside the base so it would bind up and cause twitchy/spiky throttle behaviour. Unclipped it and relocated the wire to the seemingly correct clip and it has worked fine since.
  • The Control Manager software is a bitch to get working with Windows 8+. The guy who made it no longer works for them and no plans on fixing it so if you get it working huzzah for you otherwise there are third party options for improved functionality/programmability but I do not use them so can't speak to how good they are.
  • A couple of the buttons are starting to get 'soft'. They no longer have that satisfying click when you activate them. Probably could just use a cleaning. Maybe I'll get around to that some day.
The thing about CH Products is that if they do fail, replacement parts are supposedly easy to get. If you can operate a screwdriver, electrical tape, and a glue gun there's no reason they shouldn't last longer than Elite will.

I use an X-52 on my pc. Had to replace the cable once in 4 years. Had a toggle switch stick to its neighbor, but it was an alignment issue, opened it and fixed it.

I used to use a logitech 3d pro. Great and economical. You will use a kb a lot with it. Never had issues with it, just wanted more buttons.

(I have 2 of them if someone wants to pay post)

I use a Thrustmaster on my PS4 acct.

So far just muscle memory issues. As they are both very different, I try to play in lighter situations until Im "back" with it.

Never did VR, but I hear its incredible.

I've had to increase the various deadzone options in ED over time for any analog input on the throttle and stick but it still seems to work fine otherwise. I'm wondering if that sort of thing is easy to fix once it gets too far out of alignment. I've had them since 2015.

Elite Horizons in VR is on another level of immersion.

Hmm, I haven't had that issue myself. I did set deadzones when I got them (common issue, they're not as tight as I would like) but the need to increase them hasn't crept up with time. There are fix it guides online. Some may help with that problem.
