You want to be careful using that term, also. Comparing PvP to something like rape is both disingenuous and, frankly, deeply offensive.

Being temporarily inconvenienced in a video game is not at all comparable to a horrific and traumatic event.

I'm not comparing it to rape.  I'm trying to find an expression that encompasses a PvP encounter to which one side literally does not consent, particularly in light of the largely fruitless attempts to have agreement over what constitutes ganking or griefing.  The term "non-consensual" is not owned by one set of people, and has legitimate uses outside the context of sexual assault.  See also: non-consensual medical intervention, non-consensual monitoring or surveillance, etc.

Do you have a better way to describe that kind of encounter? Also, do you have any thoughts on the point I was trying to make?

I'd argue that PvP in Open is *always* consensual simply by virtue of both parties being present in Open Play. As I said earlier, simply clicking Open could be construed as consent to the consequences thereof. And getting potentially blown up by another commander is a consequence.

The conversation changes, of course, if both commanders are part of a Private Group that specifically outlaws PvP, but no rule is in place for Open.

We can also argue that Frontier may need to do a better job of communicating the risks one takes when clicking that Open Play button...

Fair point on Open = consent.

"She left her home, wearing a short skirt. Clearly she was asking for it. Didn't put up much of a fight either."

that discussion (apart from not belonging here anyway) might get out of hand quickly so I'm just gonna shut up.

Just a small remark. Upon starting the game ... if you choose the default option to do the training mission the game put you in open without any consent or information.  This is related to the seal clubbing.

And for the progress lost ... apparently some guys forget that it is not the CR that are the harm. Imagine a guy going to Maia and back to Deciat in a cobra with a single meta-alloy by using the default route plotting which is economical.... How much time you think a guy spend to go there and back?
... in this case I saw some gankers finding such a case felt sorry and contacted their targets to give them the meta-alloy which is kind but a rare case.

Just pointing out why some people compare it to rape. The idea that people switch to open because they consent to ganking is a bit far fetched, don't you think?

And what do you expect "Excuse me sir can you be bothered to be attacked or is there significant progress that you would lose upon spontaneously combusting?"

As for returning the meta alloy. I personally see no reason not to and would either way contact the target after the fight. Apart from the fact I wouldn't attack a cobra to begin with. And I get that I'm not the standard and there are pricks but as said before that's where I draw the line between ganking and seal clubbing.

Ganking is fought back with knowledge - for game, for game mechanics, for game environment and community.

Sorry I am yet to see an attack on my toon by a wanna be ganker  with poorly build ship and lack of knowledge, but if that thing happens I will surely relive  the poor soul from its misery.

I am just pointing that it is a flawed game design which do not tell the new and inexperienced players the information which is vital for their survival and satisfaction.

But there is the fact that they fly in open knowing they're not equipped to deal with players who are out to kill them and then scream as soon as they get looked at. They go where the gankers are (Open) and complain about gankers. Yes FDev does a very poor job at delivering that information to new players but there's no excuse for players who have been around for a bit. All that Frontier would have to do is throw community tutorials in their face. Like link them to Exigeous.

The game defaults to Open because that is the intended mode to play in. However, it also states the following:

"In Open Play you may encounter other Commanders Connected Via This Mode"

It is not technically a warning, it is advisory.

However, before you purchase Elite: Dangerous explicitly on the Epic Games Store the following blurb appears:

Elite Dangerous is the definitive massively multiplayer space epic, bringing gaming’s original open world adventure to the modern generation with a connected galaxy, evolving narrative and the entirety of the Milky Way re-created at its full galactic proportions.
Starting with only a small starship and a few credits, players do whatever it takes to earn the skill, knowledge, wealth and power to survive in a futuristic cutthroat galaxy and to stand among the ranks of the iconic Elite. In an age of galactic superpowers and interstellar war, every player’s story influences the unique connected gaming experience and handcrafted evolving narrative. Governments fall, battles are lost and won, and humanity’s frontier is reshaped, all by players’ actions.

Since the beginning, I have heard stories of gankers and open world bullies and genuine players saying they will never play on Open for this reason.

I must say though, that having been here since the beginning, I have always played in Open exclusively and can only remember being properly griefed by a guy once. I could hardly get out of the mail slot!

To avoid Open because of the fear of griefers, is to miss the point I think. One only needs to reach out and you will find that most players are fair and decent folks, willing to help and advise on how to roam the Open galaxy with the right mindset to not come to too much grief.

I imagine the solo play is still an epic experience, but for me personally, it just seems a little dead.  I love seeing another CMDR pop up on the radar and hear that initial alarm bell go off in my head. I shoot them a greeting message and mostly receive a friendly ‘hail fellow well met’ in return. Sometimes nothing, but almost never is it a griefer.

Want enjoy being properly pirated (what girl doesn’t), but it wouldn’t be the same if done by a robot????

There is always a risk, but going after those new players is just overkill, idk what kind of satisfaction they get from killing a sidewinder, cobra, etc....
that feels empty for me.
