I'm actually surprised that gigabit fibre came out in New Zealand when it did, given the abysmal state that broadband had been prior.

I'm lucky I guess. I know a lot of people in my country still dream of my 100/10 Mbit connection. Could still better. But hey it's 2021 and we're somewhat upgrading. Better late than never

Yeah nah Rebecca wasn't sarcastic. Lots of countries here are genuinely trash in regards to digital infrastructure. Most likely because of the boomer effect.

Countries where boomers (more the "ok boomer" boomers than generally the age group) have a lot of influence aren't exactly likely to have good internet because a large or at least influential part of the population cares more about its retirement than making progress.

1Gbit cable is available in our city, but we're still on a 50Mbit VDSL contract because it has been fast enough for the things we do on the internet, i.e. gaming and watching Netflix. I guess that makes us boomers, too.

No, it does not make you boomers. And someone isn't automatically a boomer just because they're part of the baby boomer generation.

The boomer effect is when a bunch of old, technology averse folks blocks the construction of cellphone towers or fiber optic cables in their backwater village because they think 5G causes cancer and that Bill Gates will try to microchip them. NIMBYism is everywhere in Germany and I suppose it isn't that much different in Austria. It's part of the reason why every large construction project devolves into a fucking joke at some point. Looking at you BER and Stuttgart 21.
