Elite: Odyssey

SakashiroI can't help but wonder if the new renderer is really worth the impact it has on performance...

Under less than ideal lighting conditions the results are surprisingly flat. There seems to be no ambient light bouncing off the cockpit interior at all; anything that isn't directly illuminated remains in total darkness, which explains why you can hardly see the cockpit in an Apex taxi during the flight.

To me the lighting and materials seems to be much better than before, so I think it is worth the impact. But it's right it doesn't look very optimal in the cockpits (not sure if it's an oversight or a technical limitation, as some of the settlement interiors are suffering by the same problem), the skin shader isn't the best I've seen and what irritates me most is the inconsistent lighting on ears.

SakashiroOne topic we need to talk about is abductions, because these seem to be a real thing in Odyssey. Last night Epi and I landed our Cobras on a planet. He then entered my ship, and I took off with him, leaving his ship behind on the surface. Epi then received a message about his ship being dismissed, probably because we went too far away from it, or because we entered supercruise. Curious about the consequences, I took him to a station where we disembarked. If I remember correctly (Epi please correct me if I get any details wrong), he then had no access to any of his ships, even the ones stored at the station! He had only two options: re-enter my ship, or book an Apex taxi. Since there were settlements on the planet where he left his Cobra, he was able to return there by taxi and recall his ship.

Now there is one catch: You can book Apex only to stations and settlements, but not to random places on a planet surface. This means that if there had been no settlements, Epi would have been unable to return by himself! He would have needed me or maybe some other player to take him back to where his ship was.

So there's a huge potential for abuse here, similar to the recent slave carrier issue. Technically, your pilot body does not exist independently, it is still tied to a specific ship, sort of like a SRV or SLF.

Today I will test if it's possible to disembark from my ship at one station, go to another station via Apex, and then pick up another of my ships there. It probably should be possible, but my current guess is that it is not.

I think I can transfer my ship from Inter Astra. Yesterday, I didn't knew because it was asking me to do tutorial. Today I started and skipped tutorial and now I can transfer my ship from any social hub that have Inter Astra. So even if team member kidnap you from body without settlement and leave you somewhere, just book Apex to nearest Inter Astra and transfer your ship.

So Inter Astra can even pick up ships landed at random spots, not just "stored" ones? That would indeed solve the problem.

I think so, but I can always check it by landing on body without any settlements, then calling Apex and transferring it from Inter Astra.

Now, I am more interested what will happen if ship is destroyed while on foot or in SRV. Would I be ae to re-buy upon return with Apex.

Confirmed: You can retrieve your ship from anywhere through Inter Astra. In fact you have to, before you can use any other ship of yours. This makes Apex completely useless as a taxi between ship storage locations.

This is how you do CZ on foot:

lol

I heard you can also roll in with your SRV, which is like a tank. Much better than taking the drop ship.

The advertisements in the station lounge could be a tad bit more tongue-in-cheek, methinks.

Sakashiro
RickchapSo I hear you say that Odyssey will be its own game and one can not merge the accounts?

No, she said we'll continue playing on our existing accounts and keep all our ships, achievements, etc. Only the alpha version is like a separate game, because it is meant to test (and potentially break) things. Once Odyssey gets released for everyone, our alpha accounts will be deleted.

It will be awesome to keep all of our existing ships, really looking forward to the full release.

Apex is turning into a gift that keeps on giving. If you leave your ship somewhere and take an Apex shuttle to some other location, not only will you be required to transfer your ship, you will also lose all the cargo that your ship was carrying. It will simply disappear.

I wouldn't bother with apex except on a rare occasions such as ship got destroyed while on foot or in srv.

And that new land CZ have the potential of being next CQC. I got bored from it in the first day and we get nothing except credits. Once merged with main accounts this will be a joke.

No INF or REP too Epi?

I haven't bothered with the CZs yet, but plan too this week.
