Elite: Odyssey

This is all standard fare when it comes to FDev, I don't know how anyone can be surprised. It's actually better than my battered expectations were hoping for. I wished for lots more, but didn't expect it.

They have some very good engineers who can make a good space simulator, but they aren't very good at making a game.

Under-funded, rushed, and poorly managed. Somebody didn't spend enough time to say "wait, but is it fun?".

And if anyone thinks there is a super-stable, extra features, high-frame rate build that they just didn't want to show the testers? Well all I can say is "Can you lend me a fiver?".

Rat CatcherI'm one of those on the forum who casually interjected that Frontier had mentioned, more than once, that we were on an old and unoptimised build

If I remember correctly, they only mentioned this after people were wondering why issues reported in phase 1 were still unresolved in phase 2. I guess many people, myself included, expected to see the fixes in the test builds, too. Towards the end of the alpha, so many issues had piled up in the test build that people were constantly wondering: Is this bug still worth reporting, or am I wasting my time doing so?

The unoptimised part was mentioned from the moment the 'specs' were published before launching the alpha. The old build comments shortly after (I don't remember if the first or later livestream, but soon), but even to me (I'm not an expert in games development) the version being played looked 'less finished' than the ones we'd seen being played by the CMs on stream.

As to "is this bug worth reporting"? For the couple of minutes of one's life spent detailing it, yes, even on an 'old build' - it may have been fixed already, but may still be there 'in the wild'. But it is the choice of the individual as to how they treated the alpha.

No criticism for you cancelling your pre-order, that is a decision that is purely your own.

The problem with non-iterative testing is that sometimes one bug will keep you from discovering another. For example, if some feature is inaccessible because a button is missing in the user interface, you cannot test that feature and discover that it is broken. Adding the missing button will close the bug report but not make the product fit for release. Also, fixes may introduce new bugs. It is impossible to do regression testing in just one iteration.

Yet that is what FDev is trying to do here: catch all the bugs in one round of testing, and then release two weeks later. I don't think this has ever worked before, so it's very likely to fail this time, too. I don't even mind paywalling an alpha test in general, but this one was a farce in my opinion.

I'm happy to pay for the DLC when it's ready.

You guys think we'll have a full Odyssey release in June?

I bet some dude on the Frontier Forums that it won't be for $200. Obsidian Ant is holding the money in escrow.

Also, should I expect a 2022 release for consoles with what I'm hearing lately?

All we can do is hope that the 'bits' they wanted high-use testing on were the only game assets they were concerned about.
A 'shut-up' was given in the GalMap with a couple of changes being introduced after their obvious 'misplacement' - possibly the remaining cosmetic changes there are purely that.

All we players can do is 'wait & see' what the 19th brings - it is only 15 days to go.

They already have money so it's not like it matters anyway. I've gotten over a thousand hours out of Elite so if Odyssey ends up being a dumpster fire and I end up not playing, I still got my money's worth and I feel good about the purchase. They're not Star Citizen, and that's a good thing.

Lasers and MCs are not good weapons for Ship vs infantry. If that guy faced my FGS he will be down in one voley of dumbire missiles.

To be honest, the entire issue comes from the fact that we, playerbase, allowed developers to make us beta testers. And it wouldn't be anything bad, if not the fact in most of the cases we pay to be testers for the beta versions of the games released as launch titles and are not released as mostly-non-buggy complete products.

Hopefully this is being tuned, but ya. Good reason for me to include some Groms on more builds.

Yeah, damaging even a sidewinder with a sidearm doesn't makes any sense. Needs to be tuned down.

As long as the current functionality isn't horrifically destroyed, I will be happy. I highly doubt they would destroy a profitable game, but I guess it wouldn't be unheard of. Ambition tends to work out that way.

Do not forget to clean the Public Test client from your HDD ... it is a good amount of 50-60 GB

Yup, did that already. Mine was 45 GB.

I heard there's actually an uninstall option in the launcher, but it can't be used any more once Odyssey has disappeared from the menu.
