Elite: Odyssey

I small update on support missions:
If you get message for scavengers - kill them all before recover power and start extinguishing fires else the mission will bug out.

One PR was lost to bring you that knowledge. R. I. P.

I have not really touched any of the ground combat (aside from the mighty tutorial). Personally, I disagree with their issues regarding shields not taking more damage based on vital location hits (would not fit with shield tech in this world imo), and shield returning at 50% (sure the CD before it returns could be much longer, but again it fits with in world tech atm). The rest seems really bad so I'm wondering what ya'lls thoughts on it (their critique and/or the ground combat gameplay) are?

I agree with you and I think the combat system is totally fine. Why should a shield be weaker in some spots and if so it surely wouldn't be built to have its weak point around your head. And about the comment with spongy bullets. I think you can kill an NPC in a high conflict zone with around 10 kinetic body hits, of course, you'll be doing less damage if you use a grade 1 weapon against higher difficulty enemies that's how it is in every game. And using a thermal weapon against their shields also only takes a few hits if your loadout matches the difficulty of your enemies and again with less than 10 hits to take shields down.

Also, the way different types of weapons deal damage is a nice way to actually make people consider using different kinds of weapons. In competitive shooters, you'll mostly find a gun that everyone is using simply because it's the best one in the game.

It's also great for coop gameplay so you can have a team where one person's job is taking down shields and one to finish them off.

But I'd also be interested to hear from the experiences of others on this topic.

I don't have a problem with shields not having multiplier locations, makes sense to me for it to be equal.

I don't like the weapon swapping mechanic, it just doesn't work on foot. Instead of damage being 90/10 it should be more 66/34 so you can use a kinetic weapon against shields and it work but not as well against shields as a laser. It would be so easy for them to tweak those values.

Personally my Mav only uses the plasma pistol, whist my Dom duel-wields the L-6. Both weapons can 2-hit kill anything without the need to swap weapons.

Tormentor needs 3-4 shots to take down best grade NPC. Only Executioner, L-6 and Intimidator can two shot kill.

As with the FPS balance - I kind of like it as it is. It is overwhelming if you use low grade gear vs high rated NPCs but it is not like totally walk in the park if you get grade 5 gear. Head charging a high security ++ military settlement without getting the advantage of buildings and terrain will get you killed in no time. Same applies also if you attack alone 3-6 enemies in High CZ.

The game promote a certain silent or ranged types of game play for you to be successful in combat.

Ah, what about pacing and / or the need to reload so often with weapons other than the max upgraded top 3?
23 Jul 2021, 6:39pm
Ammo capacity is totally fine in my opinion. And the pace is really quick, I'm basically running and jumping the whole time to get to the next group of reinforcements.

I haven't used laser/kinetic combo for a long time as it is suboptimal for PvE and I prefer silent sniping aproach.

With that being said a dominator with Aphelion/AR-50 is my next project. It makes some sense vs fast moving targets including other CMDRs that jump and fly. I had some CMDRs kills with Executioner but it is always a gamble. Hit scan + kinetic weapons would increase hit ratio.

Trust me, dual wielding L-6s with stowed reloading and extended mag is so much fun.

When you drop on a capture point with loads of enemies all clustered together it's like death from above.

None of this pew pew stuff.

Yeah, I know. That was my last project a dominator with jump assist and 2x L-6 with Stowed reload and faster reload.

Still, not very effective vs airborne CMDRs.

Be like Obi-Wan, always have the higher ground.

Okay okay, ya'll have calmed me down a bit. This Exobs grind is so bad I was genuinely worried that Gcombat was going to be terrible too.

Hot take, if FDev had basically copied the FPS style of Planetside 2, it would have made a lot more sense. I have no issue with shields taking the same damage regardless of where you are shot but once shields are down, if you take a hit in the head, you should be out. Planetside 2 was nice in that there were different weapons but instead of making the mechanic be one where you need a specific type of damage gun to be effective, the guns simply worked differently for different play styles. Each faction had different weapon traits. Some guns hit hard but have slow rates of fire. Others have low damage per shot but have high rates of fire, etc... TLDR make weapons appeal to different player styles, not "must have this to take down shields, must have this to finish off." I get what they were going for in that with ships, thermal weapons do more against shields while kinetic is better against hulls, but even so, ship mounted kinetic weapons seem to be more effective against ship shields than hand held kinetic weapons are against personal shields (same goes for thermal against hull/bodies).

In that regard I personally like how Destiny 2 is handling weapons - there are also weapons more effective versus shields, but it's quite balanced advantage and not a necessity (there aren't many shielded enemies like in Odyssey, where everybody has a shield) and the weapons are varied enough. Sure, many are just slightly different variants of the same weapon archetype, but even those slight variants can make a difference in which weapon you will like and which you will not. On top of that are upgrades, which are relatively grindy, but an entertaining way. In Odyssey the options of weapons are heavily limited. Although it does the job, the Destiny's system is simply much more fun.

Artie, I agree. I also played Destiny 1 and 2. According to my Steam track record, Destiny 2 is my second most played game (Elite being #1). They did it right when it comes to needing different damage types to be effective. It helps but isn't at all mandatory.

Also side note, when I first saw the thermal assault rifle in the pics, I was honestly hoping it would fire more like the trace rifles from Destiny. A beam laser rifle basically.
