Elite: Odyssey

Yuna SakashiroDid they optimize the smoke shader?

It makes no mention of smoke at all. So I would assume the answer to that is no.

Everything in 'optimization' that is mentioned is vague or was already touched on in previous patches. "See through glass" optimizations? Something about shadows... Forward lighting (but backwards lighting is still what non-existent?)... I have doubt we'll see anything significantly improved with this. Will the CPU have a stroke every time you land at a BG? You betcha!

Reminds me of this

Hmh hmh I have tried to love the odyssey. I mean after the options fixing to match my rig. Looks great.
But but... The stations... I go to huge station... Few rooms and a bar.
Outpost? Few rooms and a bar. Some small differences between shops etc.
But all and all? Pretty little content. See one station? You have seen them all. Only some differences between guns and armors sold.
I enjoy the looks, but the stations and content inside, huuuge disappointment.
But take my money and keep updating.

Station interiors are just fancy menus to access on-foot missions and resources. They aren't really part of the gameplay, which is why you can't use your weapons there.

The actual on-foot gameplay areas are the planets. Surface settlements come in 27 different layouts if I remember correctly. So basically we got 27 maps for FPS gameplay.

Of course it would be more interesting if the settlements and interiors were procedurally generated, but can you imagine how that would have increased the number of navmesh-related bugs?

I have refused to even use the first-person m ode except to claim first footfalls. In VR you find yourself looking at a movie theater in FPS mode.
But the rest of the gameplay is totally badass since they patched it all.

Daddy O But the rest of the gameplay is totally badass since they patched it all.

Disagree.

The lighting is still bad, they haven't fixed the anti-aliasing, FPS is still well below Horizons performance and BGs framerate has plummeted for me this patch. The 10 second freeze at start of them is still there too ofc.

Ground combat framerate is... Even worse.

If the improvements are really there... they're really hard to see. Negligible.

I had a go at an on-foot combat zone.
Still unplayable on my rig (15 - 25 fps), but it is about 5 fps better than it was.
I have to pay for GeForce Now to enjoy ED:0

I seem to be of the stance that if we don't like Odyssey by now, we probably never will, given FDev's track record.

Honestly, I just want it playable without bugs and have that separation of EDH and EDO players ended.

The truth is that we are close to one year after release and it still feels as pre-beta version.

Pretty much this ^

I have a shopping list of things I would like changed or added but aren't that important. If ED:O just worked as good as Horizons I could put up with the rest of it and be glad I got it with lifetime upgrade instead of paying new money.

Agreed. I can see some improvements occasionally if I know something specific to look for, but during gameplay I can't really tell. Still garbage framerates for anything on a planet/moon surface. The game still feels like it did all those patches ago.

Okay, I'm seriously getting pissed. I sat down to try VR in ED:O for the first time this patch. These are the results sitting in a Coriolis station using preset VR-Medium graphics setting. All I did was load the game and screenshot the taskmanager from the hangar view:

ED:O - Avg. frametime 25ms (11 or lower is recommended for non-nauseating gameplay)

ED:H - Avg. Frametime 11ms

Literally unplayable . Previously I was getting around 18ms frametimes which is still bad and made worse by the constant flickering which itself seems to have improved this version. Unfortunately, the cost is too high as you can see.

Increased CPU workload for less framerate. More RAM being used (not itself I see as the issue, just observing). All for an uglier game.

Just a reminder, Arthur can be quoted almost a year ago as saying "We honestly thought the game was ready".
