Elite: Odyssey

ingame the radeon osd software shows 6.8 GB VRAM usage and 7.6 GB RAM usage, windows task manager shows only 4GB RAM usage.. hmm maybe the pagefile is counting too, mine is set to 4GB.

edit: seems that the osd software calculate the whole ram usage, even of other running progs.. so 4 GB RAM usage for edo is right (on my system).. so while edo is running and taking 4GB RAM i have other progs running with the need for 3.6 GB and all together the cpu loadout for all cores are around 40-60% -have to correct the values. quite good for an old system -and yes your workstation is a beast

edit: ahh i see you prefer intel, im on amd side my next project will be building a nice ryzen system, so far i have all components only time is less atm and have to order a bigger tower first, thought about a thermaltake, i like the ´view´ models. this pc build i need for working and video editing.. and sometimes i think for gaming too when it´s ready i can compare the performane´s and report.. but not so soon..

That all sounds about right, so that explains your performance on EDO being pretty good. I know EDO will use more resources if available, as evidenced on my system. I wish I knew for sure what the apparent hard lower limit is on hardware, where EDO is not getting what it needs. You seem to be skirting the edge and just above it.

yeah im familar with building pc´s systems.. did that many years.. it´s always interesting to setup a system, if you know what components compare good together u can have really good results.
btw. since i bought the rog thor power supply 2 years ago i have a soooo stable system. i can highly recommend to invest in good power supply, it´s worth it. it´s so often underestimated.

KluugHonestly, what do you expect?

Oh, that's an easy one. Here we go...

I expect a game that draws only a fraction of the detail found in other games to require only a fraction of the resources.

EDO draws less detail and fewer NPCs than Cyberpunk 2077. It doesn't draw any weather effects, and even the dust clouds below hovering ships have been dialed down since Horizons. It does all this with lots of glitches (flickering shadows, numerous shading errors, and probably the worst anti-aliasing in the history of video games) but requires top shelf hardware to get it done.

FDev had one of the most beautiful VR-capable procedural space games, and turned it into a bug-ridden dumpster fire with tiling terrain textures and other issues that haven't been fixed even a year later. Meanwhile, competitor Hello Games keeps releasing update after update after update, adding new gameplay options, all free of charge.

That's why FDev stinks. Any further questions?

i don´t know about such issues. Game runs fine for me - BUT they really could have done VR for 100%. I really hope they will fix that problem.

It's not about "Horizon's ran great and Odyssey runs like garbage", it's about how many resources it uses to accomplish what it is doing and about how it is an unoptimized buggy mess branded as a finished product. Horizons does a lot with a little. Odyssey does a lot with a lot more. I shouldn't need a Lamborghini just to drive to the mailbox. In my case, I don't expect it to run perfectly smooth, but given I can play other games with similar/better visuals/effects at a greater fps (and fewer bugs) on the same setup tells me there are things fundamentally wrong with either the coding or the "new and improved" game engine.

KluugTypical Elite whiner ...

"My computer barely ran Horizons. Now I can't run EDO. FDev stinks."
"I have a computer with 8gb of RAM and four cores. EDO runs slow. FDev stinks"
"I have a seven year old GPU. Why is my FPS so much slower in EDO? FDev stinks"
"No ship interiors or ladders that add nothing to gameplay. FDev stinks".

Add more of the same.

I think we need to stop blaming FDev for our old outdated hardware. It's not FDev or EDO that stinks ... it's most likely your old tired computer that's making that bad smell.

This coming from a guy running a workstation with dual Xeon Gold 6258R CPU's, 512gb ECC DDR-4 system RAM, and an RTX-3090 getting 50-75fps on an 8K monitor at 8K; at ground bases and more in space. With 90fps average at 4K. I can say with certainty given the fact I run a true computing beast .. There is nothing wrong with EDO, the engine, or FDev, when EDO is run on a proper computer. If the game or engine was bad, it would still run slow even on my system. You just need better hardware than 5 or 6 year old pre-built junk that wasn't even that good when new. And if it's a "gaming" PC ... well ... good luck with that. Judging software or its developer based on old slow hardware makes no sense at all.

Sorry ... but that's the reality. EDO needs what it needs. Maybe not as much as I use for sure (it's a work computer I happen to use at home as a graphics designer), but certainly not a four-core 8gb machine and a GPU four or five generations old. Honestly, what do you expect?

Recommended

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 64bit
Processor: Intel i5-8600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM) / AMD RX 580 (8 GB VRAM)
DirectX: Version 11
Storage: 75 GB

This is straight from their Frontier store page. You would fucking die if you saw the minimum specs, but they are LITERALLY recommending people having 5 year old OS's and 6 year old GPU's to have a comfortable experience with this game. Lol. DX12 released 7 years ago. Why the hell are you coming in here pounding your chest and pointing fingers when you can clearly see what specs are recommended?

Typical Elite Elitist. We're all glad you set everyone straight with your $1500 GPU. Clearly you are the master of Rs in that post.

EDIT: Read through your later posts. Started seeing this.. "Now granted the system I mention costs about $54K USD..." Stopped there, rolled my eyes, and knew I was dealing with a troll. Please, don't even respond.

Not a troll guys: "My game runs fine on a $50k system that there's no way I could afford if it wasn't for work paying for it". This guys opinion is definitely worth entertaining.

You beat me to it. The "Recommended" specs FDev published are not good enough. Anyone running those specs has a right to complain. The game is simply very poorly optimized. It's been proven again and again that even assets used in EDO that were copied from Horizons were implemented in ways that were extremely poorly optimized and killed performance. Just tampering with the game settings and only disabling the smoke texture used in settlements drastically improves performance and allows much older rigs to play EDO just fine.

I swear, Elite's white knights are the worst I've ever seen. This reminds me of a discussion I had over at Frontier's forum recently, about EDO's pixelated terrain.

I don't mind people having fun with the game or enjoying the parts of it that work well. It's just sad when the game clearly has issues, but those issues are never the fault of the devs, the engine, the game, etc. Honestly, and I'm being way honest here, I've never seen a cult of denial like I've seen in this game. There are even times when the SC community rebelled against some dumb decision by CIG AS A WHOLE. Yet any backlash on the forums is tempered by the knights, and it never spurs the devs to say "Oh shit.." and get really serious about the state of the game.

Didn't know ED had a Minecraft texture pack.
