Elite: Odyssey

RawnuTalking about Odyssey and on-foot stuff (@Meowers mentioned something about the emptiness of the settlements), let's talk about it:

(1) What do you really like about your space legs?
(2) What Odyssey content is your favorite?
(3) What would you love to see improved?

For me it's:
(1) After playing for long years on console, coming to Odyssey on PC (ok, SteamDeck) made me feel like a real person. Being able to walk around, to see myself as a person, really added to the immersion of the whole Elite experience. Also: fancy suits.
(2) Stealthing and sniping, I love to sneak into stuff and kill people silently from afar.
(3) Settlements are too empty and not varied enough. I want more NPCs doing every day stuff, I want shopping malls and schools and stuff, turning them into real little towns. It would also be cool to have missions combining several vehicle activites, like dogfights with your spaceships, SRV battles, SRV exploring, on-foot exploring etc. And I would love to have more Concourse stuff (see the other post of mine about Carriers). Or to frame it better: something else in a station or a port than a concourse.

Could you help with SRV driving. I can't seem to get the SRV driving. How du you start engines? W does'nt seem to get the vehicle to move? I'm stuck on th surface!

check in the control settings - I think 'R' is accelerate 'F' is decelerate by default (WASD is used for yaw & roll if/when you're not in contact with the ground)

I'd strongly advise having a key set to toggle drive assist - fine movements (moving around accurately in a small area) in an SRV are painful. (when the throttle is set to 5%, the srv doens't move, but if you boost a bit off the ground it does accelerate but too much.

There is also a handbrake (the a button by default on controller) that's insanely easy to turn on when you're not thinking of it and can make you feel insane when you try moving. You can thankfully check the bottom right panel of your vehicles hud to see if it's engaged.

Go and take a look at your settings in "Options" > SRV.

Odd. Apparently, Ground CZs don't impact the reputation with the allegiance significantly. At least from what I'm seeing, doing a bunch of High Intensity Ground CZs to test.

They do have a lesser impact on reputation, and also a lesser BGS effect, which is why I presume they don’t hurt rep with a faction/superpower as much.

I noticed this more in a less controlled environment when deliberately lowering Sirius reputation for some funky Odyssey engineer unlock (but I barely engage with its shooty bits now and only would to get the Elite merc rank faster), and it was taking an oddly long amount of time… then I did some space CZs(which count for more in a war’s outcome) and rep drop was a lot faster.

Side note: I find it funny that some ground combat earns you Combat rank, while other Mercenary rank. A while back, when I became "Dangerous", this happened while I was shooting down a skimmer. And apparently those threat 5 safeguard missions can really level you up pretty quick in Combat rank compared to all other methods.

Which is because some genius decided to make merc rank purely credit-based instead of a system like regular combat rank with progress based on kills and the rank of whatever it is (was) you just shot at. And for some reason killing some guy on the ground with a rocket launcher counts the same as taking on an Anaconda in space [for regular combat rank].

I quite enjoy the ground merc stuff, so I like having it tied to Combat as well. It is Combat, after all. That said, at higher ranks, space stuff is the only thing that has a real impact. Specifically AX, in my case. I more or less "plateaued" on Combat rank from ground, but AX kept it going.

Just got Deadeye last night. I just wish I'd see more impact on my rep with Empire/Fed while grinding CZs.

I don't mind the tie-in to Credits, honestly. I earn more from higher ranked NPC kills anyhow. I'm not necessarily "chasing" fast rank up either though. My main thing is noting what improving rep with said allegiance. Hoping to enjoy various game-play choices while also benefiting that rep. (That way I don't "have to" do boring courier missions.)

AHI think I am going back home...

This "lets do 10K ly out and back" turned into a 78K ly trip. Next time, I'll get a ride on a FC because 500+ jumps is a ridiculous waste of time while feeding your FSD to neutron stars. Those hungry bastards take about 1 pp per jump.

170+ systems discovered first.

So, I found this huge hole. Looks like an entrance to a gave? Sure. Exiting!? What do you think was there?

The standard ED answer: Absolutely nothing.
0 surprises.
Yawn.

ED's engine doesn't support planets with caves. All terrain is height maps, not voxels. There are no surprises waiting underground. If you want that sort of stuff, play No Man's Sky. That's where you can land on a random planet, dig a hole into the ground, and actually find something. It's still procedurally generated though, so the surprise aspect will wear off quickly too. And flight mechanics are better in ED. They are the game's main selling point.
