Please don't beat yourself up about it. You obviously wanted to get stuck in with a spectacular storyline, and no one is faulting your enthusiasm.
The thing to remember about ED is that our characters are just bit-players, ordinary people going about normal(!) everyday lives. The major characters are the Zachary Hudsons and Aisling Duvals (other major characters are available) and their stories are largely beyond our ability to control.
Your idea was interesting, but it would have been rather a major event which could not have been reflected in-game. So I would say that the best thing to do is to chalk it up to experience, take stock and then carry on as if nothing had happened.
