Starfield: General talk

Jonny WendtThe incredible massive thing that Elite put you in, is unique.. Star Citizen also put you in something like that..
No Man's Sky is an Arcade Space Game (you can't even use propulsion on all directions!!!) but is also ok, massive..

The REAL thing is, play what you like.. if you like to play using Fast Travel, so do it! I've played Fallout 4 many times, all of them on Survival mode, where Fast Travels where completely disabled .. and it's ok! It's my playing style, MY OWN, the game is mine, is on my computer, I got plenty of time to play it and I will do it as I like it!.. I'll not enjoy to play something because someone told it's good.. I have my OWN oppinion on EVERY SECOND played on a game, driving a car or any other thing I do on my life.. nobody sees the world as I see.. and I got MY oppinion, for everything!

Good games may come, live and die ... we'll be here to judge them good or not to OUR OWN ways!

Elite, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky are all MMO Space based games, and Starfield will not be an MMO.. it'll be a Single Player experience.. cannot even be compared to Elite!.. for those who play space games, to walk on planets, ok, but and for those who play FOR THE EXPERIENCE OF FLIGHT? I'm one of those!
I like to fly on space, and on planets with no Atmosphere, FA OFF, feel the diference betwin High G planets, and low ones, fight the Thargoids on a High G planet, it's an interesting experience, land on that 45G beast, with a friend, was another cool experience..
Something that you'll not have on other game!

Each title has it's pros and cons, so ... play what you want, and don't think because a lot of nerdy guys says that the landing time is odd.. EVERYBODY doesn't like it!
you may be not talking to the right people!

Enjoy it while it lasts my friend. With Elite having the lowest PC numbers ever, while Horizon console players are even smaller, this game is on its last legs.

A lot of folk need to get it into their heads that Elite is a ten year old game with a dwindling playerbase.

A ten year old game with a decreasing number of active players is not a game that many developers will go *too* crazy with. (BTW, unless anyone can provide a more inclusive metric, then yes: Steam Charts are the only player count metric that we have access to, which is why they get used so much)

Thargoids? Honestly, not a big ask in themselves. That's all just variation of what is already in the game, and a new spaceship model is not a massive ask compared to the tripe I see some of the forumites still begging FD for, as follows:

Stuff like earth like worlds, water worlds, life (No, JWE and Planet Zoo aren't and never were "testbeds" for "big game hunting" in Elite, and anyone who actually thinks this is an idiot), etc? Please... The game struggles enough with a base that is smaller than the Anaconda parked next to it, and people want entire bloody cities? They're insane, or on hard copium. One of those two.

Yeah, people do need to enjoy what they have as this really is probably it for Elite. If I were one of FD's stockholders I sure as heck wouldn't want them to be putting too much into this game at all, not with what we do know from the little data we common gamers have access to.

This isn't me saying the servers are about to close. I don't think that'll happen any time soon. It is me saying that people need to consider that Elite might not be receiving new stuff for much longer, relatively speaking. And it's quite plain to see that what is being done now is a lot less than it used to be. I'm wholly expecting it to dry up entirely next year around the ten year mark of its life.

That's not the same as a game closing. It just means that what you have is what you get, no more no less, from that point onwards.

As for Starfield? Well, as I've said before: I find people's obsession with needing to "replace" things a bit weird. I don't think it'll be "replacing" anything, and I think anyone who simply thinks that game with space setting = Elite Dangerous competitor is a bit simple-minded. Or easy to drag into a cult. Actually, there's a lot of overlap between the two.

Yeah, I understand that, everything you friends put on the table..
but I know lot's of players that wasn't on the Steam Base countings...

This game, Elite, was based on something a lot of players didn't even know, the 2001 Space Odyssey movie.. that is the why you listen to Blue Danube every time you dock with your docking computer, it's an movie scene!

I know that people play any game for the things it brings to you, I know people, specially the new generations, want easy things... they complain about a walk on a game!!! everything must have an shortcut or a way to be skipped.. people compete to get things done as fast as it can be done.. you can see that on every game! Diablo 2 in 6 hours.. 36 hours to get a fully upgraded suit on Elite.. haha
I understand that people has this willing of competition on games, on real life you can't actualy do that on most of the things we do.. you can't skip series on a gym, or you'll lose the porpouse of the session.. so many people that didn't enjoy that on RL, bring that willing of saving time to the playtimes on the games they play.. I'll live to see people watching movies on fast foward.. hahahahaha

Elite is not a game to skip the journey.. is a game to play the journey!
My father was big fan of the 2001 movie, I play Elite with him.. an 73 Years old man, that love space games.. he doesn't like Star Citizen.. he feels dumb on No Man's Sky.. and he probably will not like Starfield.. the Earth was gone? bah.. it's not that easy to blown up an entire planet! .. a giant space ecatomb could end life on a planet.. but to blown it to pieces??? an event that end up to blown up to pieces an entire planet could easly end up with the entire sistem!.. the balance on a planetary sistem comes on the counting of gravitational and magnetic fields of all it's bodyes.. if you take one out of that account, the entire sistem will be affected and will problaby fall apart..

but .. I met online on Elite players that play the game for 8 years.. that didn't even know the game has it's inspiration on the 2001 movie.. I invite you all to watch the movie.. and see for your own eyes.. it's amazing for those old guys, like my father, that use to love the movie, to kinda lieve the experience on a game.. and the Thargoids didn't blown up the experience.. they was part of the lore of the game, since 1984.. and that is a thing.. Elite come to life on 2014, but you can read on it's lauch screen.. 1984 - 2023.. I don't think that people (the DEV team) will let it die ..

About new things.. this week they bring up new ship cosmetics, each 3 months they do some adjustments.. yeah, isn't like No Man's Sky.. the player base is dwindling by the day.. but it's a phase..

remember.. everything can change in 20 minutes!
I lieved 11 september 2001.. it was about midday on my town, I was exiting my school, last year before goes to the Engineering College, I heard pleople talking on an World War beggining on that day.. the world changed entirely, in a couple of ours.. it's far beyond our hands reach to know what's going to happend tomorow...
so I told you all, my friends, we'll have to lieve and see!

Are you seriously comparing a video game to a bloody terror attack that cost thousands of lives? One that people are still dying from thanks to health complications that occured from towers toppling upon a city?

Just stop right there. You're taking this far too seriously. The way you are trying to be poetic is cringeworthy enough and that last paragraph just turned me off this discussion, and talking to you, entirely. You are not worth my time. Elite is a blasted video game. That last comment almost makes me want to see it shut down just to give you a reality check.

I refer back to seeing some of this game's fans as being easy to lure into a cult. I am pointing my finger at you here.

Bloody hell man... Touch grass, seriously.

Although there certainly is some overlap between Starfield and Elite, both are a little bit different games with different audiences (again, with some overlap). People can stick with one or another or enjoy both, different experiences.

By the way - whilst the Elite's Steam numbers may be going down, Inara's numbers for Elite are going slightly up and it's not worse than last year. Never trust any unofficial single source of "data", because it may be incorrect in respect to the global game's population for various reasons. Either it's Steam, Inara or any other unofficial source.

Steam numbers are always the holy grail... of reading into data with a bias. I don't take it seriously when it is used in claims about a game's health, and neither should anyone else, unless you can point to one that is exclusively sold on that storefront.

And I highly doubt Starfield will "kill Elite", just like game X of franchise Y won't kill game Z of franchise X. Different genres entirely. I expect it would be closer to other Bethesda games of this type - aka Skyrim and Fallout. Just, in space.
08 Aug 2023, 2:42pm
I see it similarly, I suppose the main Starfield's audience will be RPG players as mentioned (so Skyrim and so on). In fact, I think Starfield may actually bring more players into Elite later on, if such players never tried it before, will be done with Starfield and Elite will fit into their preferences. But let's see about that...

- I'm not comparing the game with anithing - read it again, and again if you need so..
BUT
I can explain to you.. but I cannot understand it for you..

what I said was that may life change, in a heartbeat..
by the morning you got the cold air of a peacefull winter morning and by the midday .. you got a "blasted" World War menace! - and you can say that is a Video Game.. a movie, or anithing else.. it's part of our lifes, people actualy lieve, earn their morning bread, from many different ways.. entertainment industry is one of that ways.. how you dare to minimize an industry that moves thousands and more thousands of millions of money each year???
Bet on you that you don't mind that when you call.. a Blasted Video game.. some people studdie half of their life times to give life to your blasted video games!.. and that just to get started!..

As I said.. I can explain to you.. but I cannot understand it for you...

but don't mind.. I don't bother when I don't get understood.. I bother when I don't understand..
hahahaha

Hmm, am not going to bother with Starfield it could be a great game but I don’t have the money to waste on it

I have taken a break from Elite for a bit, not quite at the outer rim of space, but somewhere in the Elder Scrolls Online.

I am really looking forward to the release of Starfield and have it on pre-order.
It is really awesome what has been done with this site in preparation for the release, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you

With this super external game support for Elite Dangerous already in place I think the is scope for it to live on for more generations to come. Elite has come a very along way from the orange line drawings of space ships on the BBC Micro Computer!

Happy flying!

How is judging a game's health by numbers on the biggest PC storefront out there that actually keeps track of said numbers, biased? Just because there are other storefronts that sell the game? You think those storefronts are greater and/or equal to the number of people that bought the game on steam?

Not to mention that it's the only stats us mere mortals have access to.

Unless I am missing something, which I admit I might well be, Artie's claim is missing one key detail: I'm not sure where on Inara I am supposedly going to see active player numbers, and unless he can provide that data, his claim will be ignored by me.

If I am wrong please do feel to correct me, as people tend to be surprised how agreeable I become when they show me a better source of information. They usually don't though and just cry because I say things they don't like.

A new Starfield live action trailer, quite nice.

I saw Starfield video spoilers today. I didn't want to and tried not to do it, but I tasted from the forbidden fruit anyway.

And it was delicious.
