Well, if I was a chick playing this and busted my ass to be a Duke, but really I'm a Duchess...Looking at Duke as my title is a little 19th century, not 32nd century...

It's the other way around - it's gendered titles that are backward and are gradually being dropped.

IRL I am a Project Manager, not a Project Manageress. My gender makes no difference to the job I'm doing, so why should it make a difference to my title?

Cadet=private Midshipman=corporal or something. It confuses my brain. Post captain is different from captain because you hold a "post". But I don't have access to a Farragut. Who chose these ranks?

Honestly, it's anyone's guess as to what gender norms will and won't look like in 1300 years. The use of gender-neutral titles while retaining an essentially bi-normative gender selection in the Commander Creator strikes me as an incredibly conservative vision, all things considered.

Royal titles are different... Frontier should have just stayed away from Royal/Imperial titles I guess.

With the population as large as it is in Elite, I think there'll be a massively wide variety of all that kind of stuff which could vary greatly even between neigbouring star systems.

I get that impression that the Bubble society is a lot more fragmented than what we have now.

In the Empire, the titles we are awarded are purely honourary - you're not actually the Duke or King of anything, it's just a way of patting you on the back.

Also true, otherwise there's a stupid amount of Kings around, and you don't gain royalty by flying around doing jobs for poncy twats now do you?

Thanks Marra, for diluting my pride...I was walking my Dog after making Duke, and was thinking in the back of my head...look at all these peasants I'm a Duke now...
