Elite: Game talk

Elite's one of those games where mastering it is like learning a skill. It takes awhile, and it takes work. I've been playing this game every day for 7 months straight, and I just found out yesterday that I didn't know as much about power management as I thought I did. That 40% rule involving power plants. Just learned that yesterday. Now I got to drag all my ships out of storage to fix my power priorities. I see people running around driving Anacondas after only two weeks, and I think "What are you doing? Where have you been? What have you seen? And in only two weeks." They got the baddest ship in the game already, they haven't faced any adversity tougher than getting onto the docking pad, and they're going to say, "That's it? This game is boring." Kind of irks me a bit. I'm just now getting enough credits for a Type-7 to help fix these stations in the Pleiades. That's an addition to the Sidewinder, Cobra Mk III, and two Asps I already have. That's at 7 months. Elite's not Assassin's Creed, you don't "finish" it in a few weeks. Their loss I guess.

Give them a break. Their only source of income has been obliterated. You would be pissed too if the same thing happened.

But, just like a child being weined of the tit, they will scream and cry and root around and finally at some point, they learn, hey I can eat solid food! Sure it's more work and effort, but look I'm a big boy now!

See, it's not even the CR/HR thing that bothers me. It's using someone else's spot to do it. There's good money to be made all over the bubble if you just put in the effort to find it yourself (or sometimes create it). I have my little money maker spot. A buddy, brand new to the game joined me there and made me very proud when he said "Now I've got to figure out how to find my own."

It bothers me for the following reasons:

  • They use it to shortcut to a big 3 ship, but then complain that there's nothing to do.
  • They don't learn any of the game mechanics because of the shortcutting, then complain when they get killed, either by NPC or player.
  • To tack on to the previous point, they get their big, bad Anaconda or whatever and assume they're pretty much godlike, which results in some rather interesting comments when they don't last long in a human or NPC fight, demanding that AI gets nerfed, for example.

On the other hand, they do blow up quite nicely.

In the process of finding your own you:
  • Have something to do
  • Learn how BGS and missions work (which gives you things to do once you have the cash, and the BGS work should give you the combat skill to hold up to at least NPCs)

Yea, that irks me too. Sure a game such as this does have its faults. There are things that I wish it had, but its good to take advantage or have fun with what it provides. Its a marathon, not a sprint. It did get boring as I played by myself when I 1st started. It all changed for me when I discovered Inara. All I wanted was the cool pilots license some people had in the Frontier forums, but I had no idea Inara WAS THIS! Just wow! Artie, you tha MAN! o7
It's the 1st game in my entire life I've spent over $200 for one game, in VA, HOTAs, Paintjobs, etc etc. The final goal is VR. So you'll get back what you put into it imho. And you're 100% right. Their loss and waste of their time whining about it. I say let 'em. We know what's up.

If you're rushing credits to reach Elite's "end game," I think you're doing it wrong. I also have bad news:

There is no "end game." Just a set of ships that are slightly more efficient to doing different tasks - tasks that cheaper ships can also do, tasks that you've been doing anyway.

Could Elite benefit from more content? Absolutely. Is Elite an MMO where the goal is to reach the endgame and raid? No. Like Skyfyre says, you will get out of Elite what you choose to put into it. For me, Elite didn't become truly compelling until I started writing logbooks here on Inara and getting into the RP aspect of things. This game excels at giving you a universe to immerse yourself in, if you'll let it.

I have been playing for 3 weeks and now have a top sec vulture, I thought I was doing well until last night and learnt a few lessons the hard way lol; 1) I have to read the provided mission information a little better lol (4hr tour around the galaxy for 1.3mil) 2) I need to have a spec ships for each role. 3) Not paying bounty's hurts the pride and the wallet. 4) Don't walk away from the PC while using docking computers and so on. There is a big learning curve in this game but it is worth it, except when it is happing.... at the time its all abuse at the screen lol

You admit that publicly? Kidding.

I've got stories. Plenty. Of. Them.
I was so relieved that I wasn't the only one the hear, "Friendship Drive."
Not knowing T Tauri stars aren't scoopable and think the FS is broke.
Constantly forgetting to get docking permission.
Or come it to fast and smack into the back of the station and bounce around like a pinball.
Not knowing how long it really took to get to a station that's 500,000Ls AFTER I took a mission.
"What's a permit?"
etc.

There are only two types of players:

Those with embarrassing noob stories from when they were learning to play, and those who lie.

Noob stories?  Just last week I tried to dock a T-10 without asking for clearance. Set down on a pad and everything. I was sober.

I'd be lying if I said I haven't pancaked a couple Cobras into the dirt on final approach into Ceres Tarn.

Oh, and yesterday I made it all the way into the toaster rack and heard that buzzer of shame you get when you forget to request for docking permission. At my home station. You know you screwed up when you make STARCON cuss you out. Those guys are super casual.
