What you get out of any given form of media depends on your character. Video games, TV, movies, music, etc... they don't create anything new in you, they just speak to something that's already there.

Erinia ScantyarI´m not against the button at all. I just want to point out that human behaviour is the source of necessity for the button and not the button itself.

Indeed it is. I would've liked to do without it, but it became a necessity at one point.

Erinia ScantyarSo yea, we do ethically questionable things in video games. But on the other hand as long as you don´t take the game for reality there is no harm in it. What´s in the game stays in the game.

Agreed. But just as you said, it depends on the mental state of a person.

As to the bleak and shitty outlook I'd suggest you read up on the history of humanity. There are phases where we made rapid progress in certain areas, but always fell back due to the primal instincts (Greed, lust for power etc.) materialising themselves in persons who acted upon them and left nothing but destruction in their wake.

I suggest you read upon it yourself.

Wars and conflict in general is an incredible catalyst for technology and are not seldomly caused by greed. Saying that wars leave 'nothing but destruction' in their wake is plainly wrong.

That has to be one of the most inanely stupid comments that I've ever seen.

Rebecca is right, War is often a catalyst for science and research....think of radio, radar, jets, atomic bomb, micro-wave, and so many things....and often a "play ground" for new technologies: think of the first Iraq war...was mostly a testbed...

but the reason to wage war is usually economics (resources (Iraq II someone?)), political (diverting social unrest outwardly or cultural binding inwardly) or religion (allthough that is usually a front for economics and political reasons)...

Actually, a total war economy (where many of those advances were born) sucks scientists from other areas of research (such as humantitarian science) and puts them onto building more efficient ways of killing. Occasionally we get accidental benefits to society, but these are usually accelerations of peacetime research so we're just getting something a few years ealier. To suggest that the death and maiming of tens of millions, the total destruction of infrastructure and the resulting long-term suffering is actully OK because we got microwave ovens ten years earlier is, well, a bit silly.

I don't recall anyone suggesting that war is OK. War is never OK. But it certainly can and does spur technological advances. I'm not clever enough for getting into complicated discussions about how slingshots developed into missiles, but the fact remains that humans have always used their ingenuity to seek better ways of killing others.

It's equally true that humans have always been exceedingly good at using that same ingenuity for positive effects. Again, I'm not clever enough to elaborate on how the practicalities of inventing the atomic bomb led (and will continue to lead) to space travel. I'm sure others will have lots more examples. We all know what the Romans did for us.

Human ingenuity has also been responsible for some of the most beautiful aspects of our history, too. Take a look through your local museums and libraries for evidence of that.

Yes, we are a complicated and conflicted species, to be sure.

But we are not, and I trust never will be, without compassion, love and hope.

Nobody mentioned war is ok....but it's not only 100% negative...and yes, war has creative as well amazing art...but indeed at high individuals cost

....but main thing is, you need to distinguish between a micro level (individuals/personal level ) or macro level (as species for example, or society, etc)...

Jemine CaesarBut we are not, and I trust never will be, without compassion, love and hope.

I share the hope that we'll never lose those qualities either. Wishing we'd act upon them more often though.

Yet I wager many that lived before us wished the same, and those that come after us will do as well.
