Niuk TimaHowever it sorta bothers me that on pad you use left circlepad while you use right hand for the stick.
This won't be a problem in practice, the muscle memory you developed in your left thumb won't confuse your right arm and wrist.

How do I board the ship when I'm in the SRV and not near a port? And how far away from port do I have to be to not request boarding permission from the port?

How do I board the ship when I'm in the SRV and not near a port? And how far away from port do I have to be to not request boarding permission from the port?
Approach your landed ship. Under it, there is a boarding area - look for a yellow square similar to a docking bad but on the belly of the ship. Once you're under it, an indicator in your srv will light up. Once it does, go to your srv menu and select "board ship". You'll be whisked back aboard.
If you just want to offload cargo, approach your ship the same way, line up with the docking hatch, and instead select "transfer cargo" - the UI here is a little kludgey. You need to select the cargo for transfer and then select "transfer cargo" again to actually do the transfer.

Are you at one of the large star ports where you started your truck out in the SRV from a kind of hanger and not from the bottom of the ship? If so, you have to go back into that hanger and I believe that you need to recall ship (I know weird) then line up in the hanger until you see the indicator light

I flew my ship out around 22 km from the port, then landed then disembarked in the SRV.

I flew my ship out around 22 km from the port, then landed then disembarked in the SRV.
If you open your SRV Menu, you can maneuver while it's open until the board ship option lights up. I find that when approaching the SRV Dock if you position yourself with the far edge of the dock at the top of your SRV cockpit view you should be at the right distance to enter as long as your lateral position is correct. You could also try maneuvering while in the external camera mode, or at least once you do find the right position have a look at how you are oriented prior to boarding.

What kind of ship. I've had issues with the SRV and Asp explorers.
Worst case scenario, self destruct in the SRV. Your out a few thousand credits but you should spawn back in your ship.
