Elite: Game talk

I would like to be able to walk around inside my ships, even if it serves no other purpose than finally letting me visit the forward observation deck of the Anaconda. The camera suite already lets us see inside our ships where windows are. One day I want to stand behind those windows and look outside.

The next step, our gangways/hatches to the outside actually opening and letting us leaving the ships, yes, that needs gameplay attached to it.

Remember how enormous these ships are. Creating high quality interiors would be a massive undertaking especially if it’s just for one, maybe four, Commanders to wander around inside them.

I hadn't thought about that. The Beluga is the size of an aircraft carrier (or cruise ship, they're the same size). Both are generally called floating cities by their occupants, so modeling the Big 5 would mean modeling, in detail, 5 cities.

LordPsymonTo me, telepresence exists because video game, no other explanation required.

Agreed. Initially, I thought my reasons might be just too silly and purposeless: It's about immersion, just being able to walk around, watch and enjoy the environment. Just like we can do in a ship, but inside a structure, to add a depth of immersion.
But then I realize. Why would someone even question the purpose of a video game? It's for fun, for Artie's sake.

Also, 30+ new messages after one day out?

You could cheat and seal large areas off, occupied by modules. But yes, it's a lot of modeling. Still it seems to be easier than actually making a game "looking at you Star Citizen".

I always pondered about one thing ever since I saw 'career' options that one can choose on INARA. However, some would need serious explanation, cause I am a bit too blind to see how these would work. For example - let's skip the most obvious options such as Bounty Hunter, Merchant or Freelancer - I understand Hacker career is for people who are fond to scan data beacons or Racer is there a true option racing around in heavily stripped out Eagles (although I've heard there are also very long distance races that rage +1kly).

But there are few I kinda do not understand or rather not seeing it how such actvities for these would work in-game. Those are Enforcer*, Astrobiologist, Xenobiologist, Mechanic, Special Agent - and my favourite, the Runaway Slave.

* I know what Enforcer is, but I am not sure how one would enforce capturing contraband, since if you shoot at Clean ship, contraband or not, you'll be shot by everything and everyone around the base.

Describes the difference between astrobiology and xenobiology. Xenobiology gameplay is not possible given the type of game Elite is, but if you're interested in becoming an astrobiologist, this entails locating and visiting surface sites with alien life. Namely barnacles, brain trees, fungus mounds, Thargoid sites given their bio-mechanical physiology, etc. Maybe not Guardian sites, because I think that would fall more under xenoarchaeology.

They are for role-playing purposes.

Speaking of which, there isn't one for Space Lawyer...

A ‘fast travel’ system between areas of interest would be a solid solution, but I can already hear the pitch forks and torches crowd.

Why ? As long as it's a combination of lifts and walk belts and not teleportation noone needs to complain.

You can't swing a dead cat in the Pleiades (or surrounding space!) without hitting a thargoid. Just look for non-human signal sources.

If you mean probably-not-deadly thargoid sites, Canonn has some data lying about their site that might help.

I don’t see a meaningful difference between those two options. Besides, people would raise hell about either!

Phisto SobaniiWell this week’s CG is creepy as hell.  Anyone else planning to blast the hell out of it?

I mean, just look at this: ‘Provisional tests indicate that students in the full flush of youth, unburdened with superfluous knowledge, respond extremely well to the programme, resulting in combat pilots of unprecedented skill.’

Well, it's over. The good guys lost.

what is the point of the total mass thing in the outfitting ship menu
