Elite: Game talk

ArtieI want to remind to everybody that nice thing on the discussions is that even when any side doesn't agree with each other, it still may rise interesting themes and topics to think about, when the opinions are properly presented. Let's preserve the nice thing.

Always happy to. But it's hard if certain people only have a vulgar vocabulary to use.

But thanks to you good Sir we have a certain feature installed on this site, and I've made use of it yet again.

Where in blazes did I say that someone did nuke a country to kingdom come? I said unless someone would do that.

Reading a sentence fully is helpful instead of blurting out like you do.

And that's the end of this discussion for me.

Feel free to respond to the entirety of my answer. Not only the part that suits you. There is no historical precedence for a war with no surviors, therefor your initial statement is wrong.

I don't know, why that's so hard to understand for you.

Hey guys:

In case you all didn't already know months ago, the Thargoids have only attacked (dun dun DUNNNN) stations with Aegis labs aboard them. Round of applause for ADM Aden Tanner and the tactical mavens at Federal Military Intelligence. *slow clap*

@Artie: I think we're seeing the downside of the ignore function here. How do you expect arguments/discussion to proceed in good faith if one side can simply shut it down the moment someone says something they don't like? And worse, then attempt to take a victory lap about it?

That´s the problem everywhere. The ignore buttoin is just a leap out of it to be sure, but the main issue is people not being convinced or simply too stubborn to give in or too emotional to stay rational. It´s the human component that´s the source. The button just makes it easier to run away.

As to the bleak and shitty outlook I'd suggest you read up on the history of humanity. There are phases where we made rapid progress in certain areas, but always fell back due to the primal instincts (Greed, lust for power etc.) materialising themselves in persons who acted upon them and left nothing but destruction in their wake.

I suggest you read upon it yourself.

Wars and conflict in general is an incredible catalyst for technology and are not seldomly caused by greed. Saying that wars leave 'nothing but destruction' in their wake is plainly wrong.

That has to be one of the most inanely stupid comments that I've ever seen.

Rebecca is right, War is often a catalyst for science and research....think of radio, radar, jets, atomic bomb, micro-wave, and so many things....and often a "play ground" for new technologies: think of the first Iraq war...was mostly a testbed...

but the reason to wage war is usually economics (resources (Iraq II someone?)), political (diverting social unrest outwardly or cultural binding inwardly) or religion (allthough that is usually a front for economics and political reasons)...

These types of discussions always carry nuance with them, and it would be dishonest not to acknowledge that. It's not all black and white.

Well, it's the free choice of everybody, it has the similar effect as not reading the discussion at all or deliberately skipping/ignoring some posts by choice.

Generally speaking, not related to any specific case: it's quite visible that the Elite community, the official forums included, are going to be a little bit harsh in their posts and contributions anywhere for the last few months (at least). I cannot say it is a direction I like. I always respected the "right" of anybody to say his/her own opinion, but if the tone of the opinion presented is artificially confrontational or can be perceived as simply... mean, I don't think it is the right way how to make a discussion. There is always a simple rule for the discussions: "Confront the post, not its poster."

To be honest, I am starting to be fed up by increasing rate of the nonsensical squabbles and the lack of the good will (once again, generally speaking, not Inara related). Sometimes, I see these black waters are flowing also here and I would like to keep Inara discussions as mature, constructive and friendly as possible.  I would be definitely glad if the word about Inara will be the "friendliest site all around" and not the opposite, that includes the discussions. But, it is a thing that rely on all of us.

but to put things into perspective, for example Thargoids

....from your chair, if you look to the ceiling to a far corner of your room...you might just distinguish a spec of dust.....do you care that on that spec of dust millions of microbes/bacterias/viruses are fighting fiercely, mindlesly each other with the capability of blowing it up x50....just for religious or resources?...

No not really...

That's the physical analogy comparing the size of earth seen from 20 ly away....and worse from the Thargoids :p

That's generally why I stay off the forums, aside from the occasional times when I poke my nose in and there's an interesting thread going on.

Learn to ignore it, you can't win every argument. Although, it can be said that if a person's only response to a difference of opinion is to block that person, you've effectively "won".

Back to Beyond, I rather meant how Beyond will be added into the content of Elite - update of the entire Core, or acting way different than Horizon add-on (which is more like an unlocker rather than content adder)?

Im fully aware I have a reputation for being "mean." It's why I rarely engage with anyone on the forums, whether here or on the Frontier site.

That said, I can understand why people want to ignore me. Thats fair enough. What I don't like, though, are people using the ignore feature to shut down a discussion that didn't turn "mean" until Vazquez called Becci "stupid" without provocation.

Bit of both. The game play stuff that's in Elite's core game will still receive the update, but as the core game doesn't have engineering, wings, or planetary landings, a lot of it will require the horizons pass to use. Likewise the Chieftain is only available to Horizons owners.

It's another expansion to Horizons basically, but it's one that's free.
