I have my hotas mounted to a wood board that just sits on my lap. Works fine.
Ha, I'm doing the exact same thing, except I eventually bought a gaming chair because slouching on the floor in front of the TV was killing my back.
I play on PC, and I was really reluctant to go HOTAS at first. Now, I can't imagine playing the game any other way - HOTAS + programmable keypad.
I've also got the HOTAS mounted to a board, and the board attaches to my desk with a few c-clamps. It's super convenient. If I played on console, I'd probably mount to a TV tray-table or something like a laptop table.
I've gotten an Oculus, specifically for this game, but after almost a year, I find that I barely use it. ED is awesome in VR - especially mining and dog fighting in a CZ - VR really changes your situational awareness. But the high contrast views of the game (HUD in particular) make the "screen door" effect of VR really pronounced, and a decent screen gives a higher resolution than "mere HD". Also, there are just a few too many controls I rely on to map to even a HOTAS (X-52 Pro. Maybe a few others are better) so I need to see the keypad, or fumble for it. Sure, there's clutch mode but I just haven't been able to get used to that.
AND, it's hard to reach for a beer/cookie with the VR bucket on your head.
I don't think I could give up the HOTAS at this point. I've recently ADDED an xbone controller to the PC for free camera control, but it's "meh". Not much of a screen sniper I guess. I've heard of people using dual joysticks, so that may be an option for PC players too (more buttons and possibly a very configurable set of controls) but I don't think that's even an option on a console. I, personally, love having a throttle, I just wish the x-52p had more controls on it - another hat, another button or two on the stick, and a few more buttons or switches on the throttle and VR would be very much the preferred option for me.
