This is good advice in general.
Another piece of advice, don't buy a ship when you can afford it. The price will at least double once it's been fit (I have a 16m Viper MkIV in my fleet, if memory serves). Add enough rebuys to learn to fly it and you're usually looking at 3-5 times base cost. Nothing's more frustrating than a ship you can't fly.
