Alex OrileyI hate when you sit down for what should have been an Epic flight of 359 jumps only to find out after 40 minutes of play that the server will be going down for an update.... Hope this update, which is scheduled to take roughly forty minutes, is on target because I would really like it make it to Ogmar by tomorrow morning and in one piece.

Finally made it to Ogmar.  What an Epic trip.  Exploration of some of the systems was amazing!  There were some magical planets out there in Deep Space.  Only 291 jumps to Sagittarius A* and more exploration.  Going to have to read some other explorers blogs on the top twenty places to see up in this area of space.  Not looking forward to the long haul back to Rhea but I am sure that it will be interesting as well!

You definitely need to make an attempt at the Planet of Death (600ly from Colonia...straight down the Z axis).

And I thought I was a marathon jumper, holy hell you are dedicated

If you are headed for Sag A* you could also look up the Great Annihilator, another supermassive black hole not too far away from there 07

Thank you Silver Taffer.

Out of curiosity, what ship do you use for your exploration? I am presently using a Diamondback Explorer that has been stripped of all weapons and utility mounts.

Hi-
have kitted out an Anaconda for Xploration, with good jump range of @ 52 LY unladen, with Grade 4 FSD Mod and Guardian FSD Booster. Great, I say, i'm on my way to check out Colonia, following a trip to Mammon. Only 372 LYs to go! Also kit out with 1 x crew for fighter (for a lighter craft Xploration of valleys and canyons etc and SRVs.

I land on an unexplored planet to gather materials, in an insignificant system in the middle of nowhere, go for a coffee, come back 30 mins later and message says "your ship has been destroyed", to which I exclaim WTF! No cargo on board, so not exactly a Pirate Magnet.
Playing in Solo mode until i get to Colonia...is this a glitch or have is there something going on I'm not aware of? Any (polite) suggestions welcome.
back at Mammon monitoring station and 12, 000,000.Credits lighter.
Cheers CMDRs

Oh, the Debbie will always have a place in my heart. She was my exploration ship for a LONG time, and was my faithful companion on the 3 MONTH trip moving to Colonia (having not really learned what I needed to about optimizing jump range, it was a LONG trip). I made it to Colonia by the skin of my teeth, having put my poor Debbie through a lot. But the credits I accumulated in cartographic data allowed me to expand my fleet once I got to Colonia. These days, my exploration ship is the Anaconda. I have plenty of room for all the modules I want for seriously long range trips. For me, that means an SRV for materials and sight-seeing; repair and refuel limpets (in case I take hull damage or I get an SOS from someone stranded along the way); a fighter (there's nothing like canyon carving in a fast, agile ship); dual AFMS units (I only had one on my DBX, but when it takes a beating you need another AFMS to repair it). A bare bones set of modules, though, would be an SRV, Shields (for landing on high-G planets), an AFMS, Advanced Discovery Scanner (see all orbiting bodies at once), Detailed Surface Scanner (makes you a lot more money as you scan each body); Fuel Scoop. If you plan on picking up anything besides materials, then a small cargo rack would be an optional item. So, a ship with 6 or 7 slots is ideal.

Really, the best ship for you is the best ship for you. In other words, What you consider a must-have isn't necessarily what I or others would. Personally, the longer your duration the more modules you may want to consider. You can do tons of exploring in the immediate neighborhood of inhabited space, which means you won't need things like AFMS--but you're more likely to need at shields and some defensive utilities. You may not even need an SRV. The DBX absolutely can remain your exploration ship. The thing takes heat like a boss and can withstand a lot (boy, do I know THAT). I would consider moving up to an ASP Explorer or a Python if you want room for more modules.

Look me up when you arrive in Colonia. My home station is Colonia Dream (Ratraii system). I have never had a ship blown up while unattended on a moon/planet, and I always play Open. Well, except one case, and that was totally my ignorance. It hadn't occurred to me that keeping the game running (after landing on a planet) while I went out to take care of errands would end up using all my fuel. I had jumped to a system with very little fuel left (the system had a fuel star), but I decided to set down first. I guess I was gone long enough that, even just sitting, the ship burned through my remaining fuel and self-destructed. I can't imagine what must have happened in your case.

Fly safe!

All of what Scubadog says plus one piece of additional advice - use your largest internal for the biggest A-rated Fuel Scoop. I have a 7A on my exploraconda and it refuels in seconds, rarely overheats! No weight penalty either.

Really good to see all this great advice for explorers, but IMHO, I would bin the DBX and get yourself an AspX. There will be those who disagree. I am sure their mothers love them too!
