oh yea? Well I'm sure the NPC you interdict will want to make it clear that you have 15 seconds to give up your cargo before they start firing; because you will jettison your cargo rather than continue firing at them.

I've interdicted thousands of NPCs. What you describe has never happened when I've done so.

So, the moral is to strike up a conversation, before you engage in "hostile action."
Interdicting someone is considered a hostile action.
It may not put a bounty on you, but it's still not a handshake.

It is certainly practical to state your intentions before starting an interdiction, but it's not a moral issue. Neither is it always a hostile action - do you turn to attack Police and Navy ships that interdict you as part of their routine patrols?

If I was a pirate, I might just shoot first and take all the bits dropped from the wreckage of the ship(s) that were destroyed.
You do know what a pirate is, don't you?
Last I looked players don't have "system security" listed as their affiliation. But I could be wrong there, I'm not involved with the Power Play and I don't belong to any minor faction.

As for the NPC's, have you ever interdicted one of the ones sent "after you" for a mission? It is possible to get behind them instead you know.
And then there are the ones where you have to hunt certain NPC's based on the mission, again, I'm pretty sure they don't try to run first.
Yea, all the ones I've talked about are a mission target to some extent, but clearly that poses an exception to your absolute ruling there.

Oh and the ones that ambush you in those sensor anomalies, clearly they don't chat you up first. Just sling insults and tell you to drop everything.

Yes, I was a pirate for three years. Made my Trade Elite from stolen diamonds.

Here's a tip: rethink how you would pirate

You'd be surprised how many would-be Roleplayers are flying around out there not knowing how to properly behave. Sometimes it's just the wrong understanding of the term, most times you can count on the person knowing fully well what they're doing and using Roleplay as excuse to simply blow you up.

RP in Elite needs to be consensual and thus you'd need to see if the opposition would be interested in it in the first place. If they're not then an apology is in order and every side goes their merry ways. If one keeps forcing their Roleplay onward after establishing the other side isn't in the mood / interested / etc. then it stops being any type of Roleplay and instead becomes harassment / bullying etc.

If there was a RP only Elite Server then things would be different. But there isn't, so it is upon the persons wanting to RP to be sensible about how they interact with others and remember that not everyone wants to RP along or at all.

Good job you're here to tell us all how to do it properly, Ryan.

God, I just love Ryan Murdoc's lessons on morality in multiplayer video games. They never get old.

Take a ship and 100 credits to make money legally or illegally - trade, bounty-hunt, pirate, assassinate your way across the galaxy.

Created by
Frontier Developments

25,681 backers pledged £1,578,316 to help bring this project to life.

Whether you want to trade for profit between systems, take part in multiplayer co-op mission alliances, free-for-all group battles and team raids to bring down planetary economies, even tip the balance of power in the galaxy (for your own advantage, of course..), or simply explore the wonders of the galaxy (and who knows what you’ll find out there..) is up to you.

Your second-to-second actions could have you taking the roles of trader, pirate, bounty hunter, leader, team player, opportunistic assassin, grand schemer, and more. You are at the centre of the action any time, any place and any way you choose – each action has a consequence, and influences the galaxy around you.

That's not what the Kickstarter says Ryan. Right from the very beginning.

You are automatically playing the Role of a Commander of a Spacecraft, everything is valid within the TOS.

Can you imagine being a trigger happy swashbuckler, prowling the dark, waiting for your next victim when suddenly...

Pirate: "Dear good fellow pilot sir, would you be so kind as to allow me to interdict you and threaten you for either your goods or your life?"

Trader: "Certainly I say good chap! Lock right on my six and fire up that interdictor I say wot!"

Pirate: "Splendid I say!"

Trader: "I appreciate you gaining my consent before violently relieving me of my prized goods!"

Pirate: "Oh! Not at all good sir! 'Tis but the moral thing to do wot! Good thing I listened to Ryan Murdoc before doing so eh?"

Trader: "Ah! Yes! He really is the arbiter of video game morality! An inspiration to us all!"

Pirate: "Hear hear!"

And off he flew with the merchant's cargo, to which he sold for a generous profit. He then celebrated with a well earned cup of tea.

F.T.W.
It doesn't pop up a request asking you if you would LIKE to be interdicted by another player (or AI) when they press the button, it just DOES it! Haa-haa!
Piracy is a real thing, in both reality and in this game, thank you.

Can't laugh hard enough, ran out of air.

also!
watch Pirates of Penzance movie from 1983 for referance to more of LordPsymon's demonstration of sillyness.

I think I prefer the tried and true method of "Arrrrrrr! Cut yer engines and give me yer booty or I'll unload me cannons right in'er yer hull!"

You don't become a fearsome pirate by being polite, and no one is going to be afraid of you if you ask permission every time you raid someone.

Yep, I used to use a chat macro through AutoHotKey that I fired off as I lined up to interdict the mark. Then another macro to tell them to cut their engines and submit to a scan, and the consequences for non-compliance. I had further "flavour" macros bound to my other F-keys to thank them for their compliance, or to make good on my previous threats - I even had one for nope-ing out if I bit off more than I could chew!

The vast majority of my player marks gave me compliments on my RP and it was enjoyable for all. Of course, you'll always get the odd sanctimonious twit who thinks you aren't playing properly to their own holier-than-thou standards, but who cares what they think?

The games called Elite: Dangerous, not Elite: Consensual Danger. Players have options to avoid this via solo and PG. You play open, you're essentially endorsing your consent. Nothing you say will sway my view on that. As for proper pirating I live by my mantra in regards to cargo. Ask. Tell. Do. Player's flee because they are greedy, They don't want to lose any of their precious cargo even though these T-9's, 7's, and 6's would only lose 20-40 tons of cargo. Their greed is what makes me have to fire my guns to attempt to disable them, sometimes accidentally kill them.

TL;DR Play open prepare to be shot and don't complain when it happens. A players greed makes them die to a pirate who asks for cargo, not the pirate.

I hope this is the right place to ask, when I look at the wings on Inara, there is a thing called top 10 Flights, how is the ranking worked out with it, how exactly do you earn points to get in that top 10?

Yes you do. Ask Dr. Peter Blood. Always polite.

I was talking about Roleplaying as topic, not Open vs. PG / Solo. So thanks for not debating the point right off the bat.

Also, just because a game is called something that gives you enough of a excuse to stop thinking when playing with other people? This isn't Call of Duty, Battlefield or another type of Ego-Shooter in case you failed to notice. If you want to stay simple then that's a good way to go though, I admit that.

And since you started to mention the Open vs. PG / Solo issue (that never will be resolved by the way), there's an easy method (and even legal by FD standards!) to avoid confrontation with unwanted people in Open.

Block them. Removes the ability to be in the same instance. Wonderful thing in my book.

And I take personal joy out of the fact that the hunters know that their prey is out there, probably even next to them (Supercruise) but they have no way of getting into contact and messing around. And without prey, the hunters will starve. Slowly.

Hear your tummy growling yet?
