Elite: Game talk

I will not so shamefully admit, this is my first Elite game. However I would very much like to play any, if not all, of the others. I'll have to hunt for some emulators.

(Let that not be a testament to my age, my first experience in gaming I had to get to through dOS.)

My first Elite style game was Wing Commander: Privateer. Still got my disc around somewhere.

I wouldn't bother. It falls into the category of 'Yes these flares look amazing on me'. It was great at the time, but is painfully dated now. Never meet your heroes (or it might be eat them, I'm not sure).

Mugpie CampbellI actually like to use Docking Computer due to Blue Danube playing in the background. It is also good for doing these break intervals for a minute or two to get yourself something to drink or eat.

But I won't deny that docking is absolutely fun. Especially with Rotational(?) Correction off.


Docking Computers are really useful if you can't be bothered doing all that docking when you have someone next door / room you have to tend to at irregular times (and that includes no delays allowed). I also can dock manually, but the most efficient way to haul illegal Passengers or contrabant is to line up with the mailslot and go through fast, then hit the brakes and let the DC kick in.

The Blue Danube never gets old for me personally. Though I do wish for the Radetzky march now and then.

Shynn MoroLast time I used Docking Computer in Elite was 25 years ago or so on ZX-Spectrum. Сompensating Coriolis rotation with Kempston joystick was real pain in the ass, so Docking Computer was an absolute must have. In 2018 manual docking is one of my favorite parts of Elite:Dangerous. Docking Computer in E:D is like autopilot in car race simulator.

It's a long time ago i used Docking Computer in Elite on Atari 1040.

Nowadays a Docking Computer is nothing else than an invention like : Hey i'm weak, kill me riskless :-)

There's something interesting I only really noticed because of switching from each ship in a row: Clipper pilots seat is on the starboard side of the cockpit, the Asp-X is in tandem (primary pilot above the secondary in a separate canopy?), and Python's primary pilot seat is on the Port side.  Yet with all three ships, the center line is from your seat, not the ships spine...

Has anyone else noticed this beforehand and gave it much thought?

It makes me curious, I mean as far as immersion goes I'm sure they want you to feel like your in command, but doesn't making the center line the pilot, not the ship spine, ruin that?
It would be easy to adjust as far as flight path goes, not so difficult to learn and add to all our piloting skills that depth of perception.  

Even the docking circle relies on our captain's seat, not the ships spine, but the image hovering over the docking pad relies on the ships spine ....  Maybe all that is pre-calculated and then just displayed to the pilot's seat as if the pilot's seat were centered with the ships spine? ....
But that can't be true because I use the "frame" bits as my guidelines to the HUD for lining up with things... So unless the actual metal parts are set to line up with the HUD being displayed as the captain's chair being center even though it's not center ..... They must have really planned out these ships, WAY before they put in the first bolt.

I use it to see if I can identify what that strange looking star or cluster off in the distance is so I can fly there.

Actualy yes, i think the old betas had an ofcenter rectical to but that changed. could be due to motion sicknes for VR

If it's motion sickness, those people probably don't get the VR headsets anyway, if they have that much issue..... I get the sense of the spinning station, when I'm aligned with it's rotational axis for the mail slot, and I'm like....
It gives me the sense that it would be nauseating, but I don't actually get motion sickness on planes or in cars or on boats in stormy seas.

That whole, my eyes say I'm moving but my inner ear begs to differ!!

On my last save I had problems with the Adder because of off-center view. I do not have enough big bucks to experiment now while saving for other ships. Yeah, I know it's trivial, but I'm cheap.

I have read about people not liking one of the combat ships because of off-center view. I think it was the FDL. I can't experiment with that one because it is one of the ones I'm saving up for.

I suspect that the cockpit is designed well enough and the pilot is close enough to the center of the big ships (Python and up) that the off-center is not noticeable.
