Kari KerenskiI've always understood "gank" to simply mean to overwhelm - the reasons for doing so being completely irrelevant.

It's a tactic advocated by Sun Tzu and tacticians throughout the ages.

And that's originally where the term originates. A gank in a MOBA is just a fight in which one sides holds a numerical advantage.

CGs are hot spots for this kind of thing no matter what platform. You can’t paint an entire platform’s community, like Mugpie was trying to do with XBOX, based on what happens there.

It’s a big game with a lot more going on than just CGs.

Of course, I merely used a CG as an example of a hotbed for gank. Good things also happen in CG's, like gankers being denied ganks.

SuperFixxxeR No, I would define gank as a completely outclassed fight - to no benefit to the ganker other than personal gratification.

I'm glad that you all saw fit to define the meaning, for excellence in conversation I give you all three golden stars.
(though the stars themselves have no value)(just a tease, but I really do appreciate the defnining)

does anyone know what the distance/proximity should be to a celestial body that is tagged for USS's for a mission to appear consistently/at all?

WilliamReacedoes anyone know what the distance/proximity should be to a celestial body that is tagged for USS's for a mission to appear consistently/at all?

I think that the spawn rate should be the same in the entire area of influence of that body, but sometimes it just takes extremely long time, so i'm not sure.

What I disagree with is the aforementioned example of overengineered FDL murdering other players for fun, especially if we are speaking about ships that in their unengineered forms are supposed to be escape masters (such as Cobra Mk III). While I agree it does fit the "Dangerous" aspect of the game, yet some forget one fact:

It's just a game.

Some of us open up Elite Dangerous to relax after the stressful day: to forget that stupid boss, abuse from the other people, or even to forget about your own disabilities and incapabilities. While I love the fact ED is very immersive... there's a fine line of that safety bubble of fiction - at least in my opinion - should be not crossed up. But again, that's just my humble opinion.

To reverse up the phrase "it's just a game" in a context of players poking at players who "whine about getting killed", I can  add the other quote up that some use, namely "you shouldn't be bothered about loss of pixel numbers".

Granted.

But we shouldn't forget for some people "progress" is earning these 2-3 million credits after the week as they go on their own pace due to multitude of reasons, such as jobs or kids. We are speaking about invested time into earing these pixel credits. But for some, loss of rebuy costs few times in a row is a forced backtracking. That's why people do avoid Open Mode.

That's why Private Groups were created for - and one of the reasons why I'm against removal of content from Private Groups and Solo Mode.

As a sidenote, I may have sounded harsh for Xbox community. I am sorry about it. Honestly, I'm sorry. But I based the earlier statement - and sorta wrote it in a wrong manner - it is mostly on my CG experiences and some unlikely experiences outside CG in Open. I know not all Xbox players are like that, but there's plenty of people who add the insult to the wound when someone wants to try Open Mode.

I strongly dislike ganks for the lulz too, but if you fly to relax, there's an option and a rule to go by: Don't fly in open. If you want to meet other CMDRs still, but without the drama, join the Mobius group. In open all and everything goes. Prime reason why I usually don't play open.

Naturally people are free to choose whatever mode suits them, but portrayals of open being nothing but a den of malevolent players waiting behind every star in engineered ships are quite frankly grossly misleading. Aside from certain hotspots such as powerplay capitals and community goal locations, open is for the most part nearly indistinguishable from solo or a sparsely populated private group.

As unpleasant as it may be for a new player to be relentlessly hunted by these mythical gankers, it is equally irresponsible for veteran players to spread rumors of open being something that it isn't.

The thing is, people are at those hotspots, because they are the places of interest in the game. If you are frequently engineering ships, enjoy doing CGs or even some powerplay, then open is that murderhole. I fully agree that there's little to fear somewhere out in the boonies. But why fly in open then anyway, since you won't even notice the differemce.

I avoided open for years (until I joined a squadron) for exactly that reason. I've been crushed by players but that was in a "fair fight", but my experience in Open has been overwhelmingly positive. I've had some lovely interactions with players I've met in Open, and I try and play in Open whenever I can now, even with the risk of my 'conda or Cutter being wiped out.

Because even the murderholes aren't murderholes. Is there an increased chance of an unpleasant encounter due to the sheer number of players who are there? Yes. Is it the surefire thing that some claim? Not even close. Of all the Community Goals in which I've participated, I don't think I've been randomly attacked more than... four times? Five?- and this is after four years, mind you.

As for your question of "why fly in open?", well, again- to each their own. But I think that the answer has been given- the good far outweighs the oft-exaggerated bad, and because for many of us, an element of risk adds a certain spice to the game.

I do all those things and wouldn’t agree Open is ‘that murderhole.’

That said I’m usually in my FDL and ready for anything. Personal experience coloring perspective here, I’m sure.

Flying in various instances = personal preference of the person.

Everyone has their own opinion on the matter, but those opinions don't make either (Open / PG / Solo) better or worse in any possible way.

And personal opinions are just that - personal. Voicing them doesn't require anyone else to follow them or feel bad about themselves, because opinions are no rules.

Blaze your own trail. That's it.

Simple rule of thumb.

Stay strapped or get blapped.
