Forgive me for asking but what is the link between exploring and having a ship that runs cold? I’m missing the whole long jump range/ low thermal output connection thing there

Maybe scooping

I find for scooping size matters most of all , the bigger the scoop the better things are. Never had an issue there with heat

my galaxy map freezes and breaks-up,almost impossible to use. I have an Asus g20cb pc and use oculus rift. I've up-dated the graphics drivers to no effect. Any ideas.

Long jump range = very fuel efficient on shorter jumps. You can go thousands of ly on eco mode without scooping. Or you can reach places of interest or come back home fast by using maximum range jumps.
Cold ship = getting dropped between binaries too close for comfort does happen. I've heard "fuel scooping" on hyperspace exit often enough on my travels. Running cold gives you more time to escape heat damage. And when coming home after the journey and getting interdicted, you quickly drop off the opponent's sensors if you run cold while running away.

I hear what you’re saying, had my share of being dropped out into binary(or greater) systems and suffered accordingly but my explorer build is basically tissue paper and balsa wood for an 80 ly jump range. ( I spend a lot of time out in the formadine). This also means that a sidewinder with a pulse laser will rip me a new one so running cold won’t be much of a help. I appreciate what you mean though, I just can’t see it being of use to myself

Have you tried turning the graphics settings for the Galaxy map down to low, out of interest?

My current explorer is the Iclipper, I'll have anything as an explorer that feels nice in SC

The ONE part of the game that does NOT shine in VR is the galaxy map.

I definitely agree with the above suggestion from CMDR SuperFixxxeR - turn down the details and fanciness to see if that will help. But yeah, the galaxy map is rough to use in VR, even if it renders nicely; Or maybe I just don't "get it".

I'm new to E:D, only been playing for 7-8 hours... still in the original Sidewinder with 250k credits... which is probably slow going but I'm happy with that.

Thinking about my next ship, really keen on the Viper MkIV as I really like how it looks, and its equipped well and seems like a great all round ship and I can still fly alone.

However the Cobra MkIII seems just as well equipped (maybe better, maybe not) is faster, less protected though, cheaper, and it's the original starting ship but not as nice looking imo and needs extra crew.

They are both at the price point I think would be good for the next ship, rather than going cheaper and upgrading, prefer to take a bit longer and get one of these and upgrade.

So... what do you CMDRs think... of the two, which would you choose and why, Cobra MkIII or Viper MkIV?

I would go with the Cobra. That was my path, Sidey, to Cobra, to AspX, to Python. I got a Viper much, much later, just for sparring. IMO, once you've played a while in the Cobra, you'll start getting additional ships for specific purposes - Vulture for fighting, AspX for exploration and some trading, etc... Then you start to really equip them to your needs - the right tool for the right job and all that.

Welcome, and no, no ship needs extra crew. You can fly them all alone. Those extra seats are for multicrew, where another player joins you to fill a gunner of fighter pilot role, if you have turrets and/or a fighter bay.

Being not worried about the time it takes to get the credits you need, and if I was in your position, I would probably go for the viper mkIV.

You have one extra internal slot due to the military compartment and the weaponry is the same. Also you get more armor for only slightly more mass.

However, all your core slots are the same, so if you want to be able to jump farther you would probably do better with the cobra mkIII

In the end it depends on what you want to use it for primarily.
The manufacturers compare the ships as all-purpose for the cobra or heavy-fighter for the viper.
Most ships can be multi-role based entirely on how you set up the optional internal slots.

As for my own preference, and the difference of less than 100k credits, I would wait and get the viper for a sturdier ship.

This point is clear, multi-crew ships just allow you the option of having a friend jump in the co-seat with you, they are not required for you to use the ship.

In the future we may get ones that do require multiple Player crew members in order for the engines to start.
