Elite: Game talk

Skyfyre70Since we're talkin about docking computers, well, let's just say my experience wasn't ...thrilling.

I hear these stories and I think they're some elaborate joke. People boosting into the back wall, or into the outside of the station or like you say. But I have never, not once, had the DC misbehave. If anything, I've seen it recover a totally botched approach like a champ time and again.

Give it time... my good man, give it time.

I'm not knocking folks that use it, not in the slightest. Just not meeee. I like landing manually. Its fun. As long as I don't forget that the landing gear is always beneath the ship! Its all good. Besides, I can use the slot for something useless, but that's me. ADS and fuel scoops are my favs. Love 'em!

Just my 1st experience [and last] with them was ....entertaining as I didn't know it was a bug at the time, so it wasn't the DC's fault. Freaked me out a bit as I thought I did something wrong. Wish I had a vid.

Stryker Aune You should, as you represent your squadron. You wouldn't want to piss anyone off that might take their grievance with you in game and stomp your minor faction's BGS....

Just saying.

No threats detected so far Stryker, and if my enemies are using docking computers... well, their loss when it could be a a hull reinforcement instead

I wasn't referring to someone who might use a docking computer as someone who may take offence, I was referring to people taking offence to your snotty, rude, condensending, and quite frankly abrasive behavior.

It paints you, and your squadron in a very negitive light.

Docking computers.
I used them way back near launch but not for years now. I can see where they can be useful and not just for being lazy, for example say your running some quick delivery missions, one of the family has an issue that needs to be solved and you have just popped into the station perimeter, pop that sucker on and go deal with family or you could use it to listen to that sweet Blue Danube that was in the docking computer sequence of the original Elite.

Back near launch there were issues with the DC that crashed your ship on occasion.

As for docking faster than a human, not even close to true, Most pilots worth their salt can boost into the station drop gear and know exactly where the pad is that they have been assigned before entering the slot just from memory, The navigation orb next to your radar panel shows you where your pad is once you have passed through the slot so there is no need to search.

In fast mission running ships that can spare the slot, use it if you want for convenience but don't become complacent, learn to fly properly, your ships and credit balance will thank you. for any other ship it is not as important as almost any other module.

I've got a DC on my A-Haul-O when I'm Space-Truckin; use it when I'm reading articles or queuing videos up on the second screen or plotting next jump route. That and a size two slot for an extra 8T in a T9 is pennies in the wallet. They are definitely not any faster than manual and you're practically guaranteed to be scanned every time. That said I've not had one do me wrong yet.

However, damaged stations do not have auto-dock capabilities so you've gotta maintain at least some maneuvering skill.

on a minor tangent; are there any player groups that work towards repairing damaged stations? I'm out in Brib giving Dominique Holdings a hand but I wonder if there's a cohesive group working towards getting some of these stations back online.

What is your beef, seriously?

1. I disagreed that DC's are useful, or faster than manual docking from my experience with them. I wasn't rude about this and this is not an uncommon view amongst decent pilots either. In fact my exact statement was;

SuperFixxxeRI personally would not recommend the docking module - for one, it cuts a portion of the fun out of Elite and more importantly it uses up a precious module slot.

Rude? Condescending? Plz.

2. I jested another CMDR needed landing lessons. Y'know... for the bants. If you want to take that seriously well, I think that says more about you than me. The actual quote was;

SuperFixxxeRI suggest some practice landing, CMDR

(pssst. a winky face at the end of a sentence often means its light hearted, or I'm making some sort of inappropriate comment)

3. Whatever you think I'm coming across as, you're coming across extremely sensitive. I'd rather represent my squad as a person with an opinion and who speaks up, than a person who gets offended by someone discussing docking computers. Christ.

So stop singling me out. Its clear from the conversation that DC's split opinion.

Spot on, CMDR.

*grabs oar*

Docking Computers are like Auto-Correct - if you know what you're doing, you don't need them

And for what it's worth, I don't think there's anything wrong with what SuperFixxxeR said. I do think there's some sensitive triggers here, though.

At the end of the day it’s your ship your credits and your style of play so enjoy it to the max and ignore what anybody else thinks. (Wise advice as I think people who use docking computers should have big red ‘L’ plates on their ships and are also waiting for a second testicle to descend... (sits back and waits with a HUGE grin))

as someone who prefers to peacefully looptrade all day long, i have to say i use my DC a lot in my T9. Nothing more relaxing than watching firefly for the 20th time while your ship does all the work for you and you earn credits. #SpaceTruckersLife

This ^

The DC was a must in original Elite, trying to land with wire-frame visuals was tricky. The outline of the slot expanded until it disappeared on final approach, so you had to match the roll of your ship to that of the station. Get that wrong and ... boom!
Nothing worse than spending a couple of hours filling your cargo bay with pirated goods, only to mis-judge the approach

Now-a-days though I prefer manual landing, it’s more satisfying.

So, hey, UA bombing isn’t a thing anymore. How do we feel about that?

Perhaps it’ll be a less controversial topic.

After the UA bombing of the Dove Enigma, good riddance to it, I reckon!

I won’t miss the mechanic at all.

I never used UA/TAs myself. Helped to repair a few stations damaged by them. I don't think I'll miss the mechanic either.

As distasteful as that incident was to many of us, it inspired many players to step up and save the voyage, making it more of a success story than if it had gone without incident.

As Bob Ross, in his infinite wisdom, said: "Without the dark, the light won't shine through."

I was playing a CG yesterday, accidently hit non warrant craft and received a 200 CR bounty
I immediately left the zone and went two an intergalactic factor, to pay find, when I got there
There was no fighting to pay, can I go back to the system and station without being destroyed?
30 Nov 2018, 3:22pm
I never dabbled with it but from what I understand, it was broken, unintended, so Frontier have fixed it.... which is good. I think they're even doing a bit of a lore wrap through Galnet as well. [source]
