Elite: Game talk

I've never crashed a large ship by bad docking ever, and if you take a look at my T9 (my only large ship) you'll see I don't have a DC fitted and never have. I always dock manually and I can do it faster than a DC can, with considerable ease I might add.
My opinion of a DC is absolutely valid and not uncommon among CMDR's - the DC is often seen as a cop out and I maintain that it is. But you play as you like, I don't care if you don't like hearing you can't land properly, or that you are too lazy to land your small ships without one...
I actually didn't try to start an argument over personal opinion - I was merely providing the 'other side' of the argument. DC's are for the lazy, and they take the fun out of the game.

These days, there is one scenario in which I would still equip a docking computer - though given the choice, I prefer a discovery scanner - and that is when I am traversing the bubble without a specific route pre-planned, making opportunistic trades from one system to the next as I go. Engaging autodock gives me time to switch away from the game, plan the next leg of my journey, and switch back to the game in time to plot my next jump while still docking, sell my cargo, buy the next batch, and be on my way with less time spent sitting on the pad. When there is a bunch of overhead to docking and route planning, autodocking saves me time and effort - and isn't that the whole point of automation?

You should, as you represent your squadron. You wouldn't want to piss anyone off that might take their grievance with you in game and stomp your minor faction's BGS....
Just saying.

Isaiah EvansonWhat the hell is a docking computer?
Its a module that will dock your ship. Some CMDR's feel it has limited use, and some seem to defend it to the DEATH. You should try it out to decide for yourself.

No threats detected so far Stryker, and if my enemies are using docking computers... well, their loss when it could be a a hull reinforcement instead
ArtieBut, everybody who remember old Elite games should use docking computer at least once. Because, you know.... Blue Danube.
100% agree with that, very nice touch by the Frontier devs.

One of the reasons to play elite some classical music education.
A shame you cant leave your ship as in 1984.

EXACTLY! I use the thing very rarely, but every time I do, it makes me smile. It's such a nice homage to such an iconic scene.

Thanks CMDR's, this is invaluable advice... I did realise afterwards that restarting wasn't necessary and I could just strip the parts, but I wasn't clear on storage and think that is a preferred option for me in the short term for the SRV module etc
I just used "horizon sidewinder" to describe the kitted out sidewinder that the expansion offers you, I know it's not different in basic trim. Cheers tho.
I like the idea of a cheap hauler as combat is not really my thing, not until I've practiced it well and, yep, the sidewinder would be perfect for that. Think I'll just put fuel scoops on it, leave the current FSD and take it from there.
Thanks again, this is awesome feedback
May I suggest keeping your Sidewinder once you get it how you want it. There might be a time when you just wanna fly it for no good reason other than it flies very nicely. Then there is the chance that, once you find your home, a ship you want to purchase is not available there. So, you'd have to fly to another system to buy one. Transferring a Sidewinder back to your home system is very inexpensive. Another reason to keep it is if you really want to upgrade another ship and make the mistake of overspending and you don't have a good reserve of credits for insurance purposes. The more expensive the ship the higher the insurance cost is. Flying your Sidewinder while building back your bank account is a safe way not to lose your new ship. Eventually this won't be an issue as you'll find out making credits is relatively easy but starting out can be a big step. I love my Sidewinder, MSS Sunrise, and although I have 6 ships I still enjoy taking her out now and then just for some short jaunts and making a few credits with data delivery.
On the subject of those courier/data missions.. be wary of the sensitive data transfer and sensitive poll data as those can bring about an enemy ship being sent out after you. I take them no problem but avoiding interdictions in my Sidewinder is a snap. I recommend getting a few interdictions and figuring out how to beat them under your belt before taking those kinda missions. They are out to destroy your ship period and if you lose the interdiction game you have problems on your hands. The basic courier missions, well I've never had bad guys sent out after me when I tote those. There are several videos about interdictions and how to beat them or how to put yourself in the advantage if you have to submit available and I recommend watching them possibly a few times.

Stryker AuneXeknosWould it be worth it to grind engineering mats now? Or better to wait for 3.3 and the changes to how USS(es?) spawn?
Hey man!
Welcome back!
What's good, broseph?

I think it's worth using at least once for the nostalgia, then set aside. There are many more modules that you'll find more useful more often, and time spent waiting for the docking module to do its thing is time better spent practicing flying your ship in different situations - such as learning how to fly a larger ship into a mail slot. No offense intended, of course, and people are certainly free to outfit their ships however they like.

I installed one went out somewhere tried to land, and rolled in a perfect circle after I requested docking.
W... ....T .....Fing ....F is this sh*t?!? "I'm better off not even asking to land!! Let's go for it!"
I swore to the almighty RNG gods that I'd NEVER use a DC again, ever!
What I didn't know at the time was there was a bug attempting to land using a DC at an outpost. Don't care. Still don't.
I flew flight sims for years before Elite. So VTOL is easy sleazy.
Hard time landing a Vette? Yea, try landing a 747 at night using only IFR.

Skyfyre70Since we're talkin about docking computers, well, let's just say my experience wasn't ...thrilling.
I hear these stories and I think they're some elaborate joke. People boosting into the back wall, or into the outside of the station or like you say. But I have never, not once, had the DC misbehave. If anything, I've seen it recover a totally botched approach like a champ time and again.
