I think the Russians in this game are very lucky. When they talk, all you see is little boxes, and I doubt FDev filters any of their slurs.

You can swear in russian too using translit. Game will not filter it.

I don't know enough Russian to test that nor Russian slurs for that matter.

What is UTF... Once I met a Russian cmdr at engineering base... I could see his messages with 3rd party tool when I typed my replies I was seeing again boxes only but we understood each other anyway.

Yeah, those boxes keep puzzling me. The game clearly understands UTF-8, but it seems to use an external font for rendering Cyrillic which doesn't appear to be installed on my PC.

I'm curious how the game handles Asian chars, but I just can't get my hubby to play ED with me. He's more of a casual gamer.

This game reminds me of windows. Short-sighted design ending up with patch after patch to clean up the mess.

That's the case with a lot of games and software in general though. The only variable is how short-sighted it really is. Can't expect anyone to be flawless

Sure, this is true. But there are levels of short-sightness; for instance, why the hell didn't they use a utf8 charset? It was widely used for many years even back in 2014. Moreover, their UI decisions are the least to say uncommon. I know they are trying to create obstacles for the bots but there is a middle line for everything and surely they ignore it all right.

They do, but the font to display non-western chars doesn't come with the game, which makes perfect sense. I've seen screenshots where Cyrillic is rendered in ED just fine. I guess it requires some language pack for Windows to be installed.

So, what you are saying is that if we install cyrillic language support, problem will be solved?

EDIT: I have installed greek language support to my windows installation, yet when I type in greek, I still get boxes.

I guess that means they've hardcoded the location/name of the external Cyrillic font used in the game. ED does get advertised as supporting Russian but not Greek.

I agree that is shortsighted.
