Elite: Game talk

Zack CountlerHello out there,
I am a fairly new player, just under one week, and I have wanted to try exploration since I found out about Elite Dangerous. The thing is, I don't have a clue as to which ship is best and am looking for something under twenty million or so. Any advice on which ship I should use and which modules should be equipped? For reference, I have taken a look at the Elite Dangerous wiki on exploration, but I am not sure how reliable it is or if it left out anything important. I would appreciate any help or advice given to me.

I'm very new to this too. I got the diamondback explorer, though mine has a load more scanners, cargo space, weapons, and limpets than the build above. I still have over 30ly range, even though I've set it up poorly, with some bits that are overkill (mine weighs 389t), its fun.

Rickchap I am trying to do my learning about engineering as I was looking for Meta-alloys. rickchap

Hey it looks like nobody responded to this part of your question. I'm pretty new to the game myself but the Meta-alloys was an easy one to knock out: they're sold in the Maia system (1 at a time but you only need 1 to unlock your first engineer anyway).

I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the search functions here on Inara as they are invaluable for finding goods, commodities, and materials. (Galaxy button up top to get the left pane to display > Systems and Stations > Nearest) Load your system location in there, find the thing you're looking for and BAM: lists of systems where you can get it, the available quantities, current prices, distance from jump in point, the whole thing.

Also, if you haven't yet, check out: Eddb.io and Coriolis.io for lots of other handy searching functions and ship customizing (before you drop millions of credits on something that doesn't work very well on paper).

Good luck commander!

I agree re: using Coriolis or EDSY, when building your ship; it's free & you can switch & adjust between different grades & classes of modules.

If you use Inara to select outfitting sources, include the selection for "Discounted Only". You can save up to 15% off in those systems which not only cuts your bill, it also reduces your Re-Buy cost accordingly.

Generally, I'll choose either Grade A or Grade D modules whenever possible.

Play in Solo or Private Group; you'll not have to worry about any "Unfortunate Events" from unfriendly players.

Some would recommend building your ship stripped-down for maximum range; while that'll work, it does have its risks.

Let me relate an actual experience for example.

I'd recently completed the Community Goal for turning in exploration data to Betancourt Base. That new station has what's commonly known as "Noob Hammers" - long extensions coming out from the main body of the station which, due to the station's rotation, swing around at relatively high velocity. First time I'd seen them on a station, but I'd heard of them before.

Me, coming in to turn in my data, didn't notice them at first, & when I did, thought that I could scoot by/between & yet remain within the 'Speed Limit'.

I was wrong - those "Noob Hammers" do move deceptively fast... & as I was maneuvering in, thinking I'd missed the 1st 1 to pass by, the 1 following it swung around & hit me like a baseball bat. WHANG!

Well, I prefer to sacrifice some jump range on my AspX for some resiliency - my ship spun around 1nce or 2wice, & aside from some shield damage, survived relatively unscathed, & I got to qualify for just short of the top 10% mark.

Others weren't so lucky. It just so turned out that while I was berthed there, another who happened to be coming in, also in an AspX, but evidently stripped down to the bare minimum & without shields, decent armor, etc. got their ship smashed & destroyed like a pumpkin by 1 of the same "Noob Hammers". Yup, not only did they lose their ship to a re-buy, but they also lost all that exploration data too. I heard their story in System Chat. Another pilot playing in Open & coming in to deliver their data lost their ship & data to a ganker just outside the station...

HUGE Double-Ouchie for both players!

Moral of the story is, build & play as you wish, but be prepared for the risks. "Noob Hammers" aren't the only thing that can take your ship out, way far out there alone in deep space, far from anyone else & help, or even in both cases, just outside their destination too.

Just some advice from a 'Relative Newb'.

One other way to get meta alloys is from barnacle sites in the Pleiades Sector, near to Maia. You can use the Detail Surface Scanner to locate the site and land there (a small ship like a DBX is best). Then in your SRV go to you contact list on your left UI panel and target each signal in turn. Shoot the contacts to release resources, some of which will be meta alloys.
Best part is you save the cost of buying the MA from Darnielle’s Progress (around 100k credits last I knew)

Pleiades Sector IH-V c2-16 is one system and you go to planetary body C4 where there are two barnacle sites.

My exploration DBX is reasonable DBX
But never gets close to the bubble...

For those expeditions where there is slight risk - my Phantom is employed: Armed Explorer
Basically able to perma-boost at just under 600 m/s so faster than most threats...

Matt87Just looking for a general opinion on decent combat ship.. Just casual combat I guess nothing extreme. Lol.. I've been using krait mk 2...just kinda like to try something different maybe.

FDL is good change but you will need some engineering to make the build work.

I would recommend the Alliance Chieftain it's got firepower pretty close to a krait as well as being around about the same speed and more maneuverable. If you outfit and engineer it right they can be pretty tanky considering how fast they are. Also it's a fair bit cheaper than a krait so it's easier on the wallet too.

Good suggestion but it is downgrade compared to krait.

I think an FDL is overkill for "Casual Combat" I think a Chieftain is more appropriate to his level of experience and funds. An FDL is a bit of a 1 trick pony while a chieftain can have a bit more flexibility in terms of what roles you can use it for.

Chieftains punch well above their weight, I've beaten engineered FDL's in PVP with my chieftain.

It can be done if there is a large skill gap between the FDL and chieftain pilot. Objectively speaking the FDL is better than the chieftain in just about every category, health pool, damage output, speed, handling.

I'm building an FDL PvP ship... then I'd love to get some tips from GER and Zentzlb, Epi and Alex. Always looking to learn more. Love this game for that!

use this: https://s.orbis.zone/bcyO
its overall the strongest fdl for both 1v1s and wing fights.

@Smaloo - I do not do PvP, especially if I can avoid it.

Quick question, is there anywhere on INARA or any of the other 3rd party databases that lets me know what system permits I have?

thank you advance

ok i'm confused by this latest engineer news - can anyone clarify what the 'boost to augmentation' means??? will the weapons be more powerful?? or do we just get the same end result but for less materials?
