Against gankers might be good to have some apparently weak ship (like Cobra) to land a surprise when someone interdicts you. Downside of cobra is that you will have much weaker shields than FDL, no matter how much you engineer, so you'll need to be nimble to win the fight

Antoneeok i'm confused by this latest engineer news - can anyone clarify what the 'boost to augmentation' means??? will the weapons be more powerful?? or do we just get the same end result but for less materials?

I don't see any boost in game. You just need less materials. Like G5 mc is still 70% to damage, but you need only 1 piece of each material.

No, that's not a fight the Cobra is going to win.

The Cobra is quite adept at GTFO, though - play to its strengths.

Nekito StriderAny Xbox Colonia based CMDRs hang out here?

I used to, but Carcosa recently went communist, so I'm in the bubble getting started on an Apache Resistance. I still have a bunch of ships out there, and a Dolphin that can get me there in under five hours...

...so, what's doin'?

Sir Sprocketto7 Commanders.

Quick question, is there anywhere on INARA or any of the other 3rd party databases that lets me know what system permits I have?

thank you advance

Its on your ship.

I was looking at the Wiki site and read the page about the Orca, and I noticed this bit of info:

"According to the Newsletter #84, with 0.016% of players piloting it the Orca is the least popular ship in the game."

Why?

Maybe because it’s not really good at anything except bling?

I love mine...I use it for mat gathering. Got the srv, collectors, repair, refuel limpets....I kinda like droppin in on distress calls....but a lot of the time I switch out the repairs and refuels for recon andd a fuel scoop depending on what I looking for.
Top it off with 2 Beam lasers for dropping into res and tagging a hit or 2 on the pirates already in trouble. limpets flying....
It's not the "greatest" but is fun to fly, turns like a champ and you have to admit...stylin'

Really though?

- Reasonably good jump range
- Enough room for decent sized passenger cabins, including luxury cabins, with room left over for a large fuel scoop
- Unusually fast and nimble for a large ship

It's basically the perfect ship for sightseeing missions, especially if you stack them.

I use this link to check out the basics. If you take a look, you‘ll see that the Krait Phantom, for example, has as many (and better) optional, and the Phantom is renowned as a jumper. So, just looking at the hulls, I really don’t see any advantage for the Orca. Except bling.

I played around on edsy.org a bit just to see what I could do, and the Orca really doesn’t have any advantage, IMHO.

Sorry, didn’t see your post

I’ll admit, the Orca is fast, that boost speed is cool. However, there are other comparable ships besides that. I suppose it comes down to preference and some niggly details. I’ll not judge!

The ability to equip luxury cabins is an advantage. Granted, luxury passenger missions aren't quite as common, and the payout isn't as good as it ought to be, considering the risks associated with these passengers (and not to mention the name - LUXURY), but they do exist, they pay well enough despite the imbalance, and make for strong rep building. May not seem that important, but if you do a lot of sightseeing missions like I do, it's an advantage that the Orca (or any of the SK ships) has over the Phantom and other exploration ships.

And while this probably falls under "bling" I guess, there's also the aesthetics. It's like when I was using a Krait MkII as an alternative to my Type 6 for cargo missions to outposts and such. Was a great idea on paper considering the far greater internals, defensive capabilities and the fighter bay, but after a while it seemed really unappealing, and I went back to my trusty, specialized flying brick. Totally subjective in this case though.

And even if you disagree with everything I just wrote, I feel it still leaves my original question open. Why is the Orca the least used ship in the game?

To your comments: there’s not really anything to disagree with, it’s really all just personal preference at the end of the day, and we’re only currently at the discussion phase - we haven’t even started on experimental building and comparing, test flights at system-specific dawn with loaded cabins, etc. All I’m saying is that on paper, there are other ships on both ends of the price range that can do the same or better, and at the end of the day a slick paint job can sway a customer.

To your question: see above, partly. Moreover, I believe that the majority here would see the Orca as fairly mundane. Why go for the Prius when you can drive the Porsche? The Cityliner or the Mack truck? (I would worry a bit about using a Mack rig for passengers, considering the ablution issues...)

Most of the medium to large ships can do passenger missions, so I doubt that is a deciding factor.

The Orca does have an awesome boost speed, bonus. This is offset by minimal hardpoints, but you’re going to be mainly running, so priorities. It does sort of diminish the all-rounder ship image that most will aim for at this stage of monetary possessions.

Orca looks sleek. However, I can’t park it in my driveway, unless I use it as my actual house, which negates the wow value somewhat. And space, well, space is so damn big that I *never* get the compliments I crave. It just makes me want to buy something I can make them notice me in!

Meh, it’s all conjecture, albeit somewhat informed and analysed. Maybe somebody should design a survey or something

I like your preference: tour operator The Orca fits. Suitably niche If you expand it to a taxi service between ships, I’ll be interested.

To add: I’ve never owned an Orca, but I plan to at some stage. Each ship has its own characteristics, and I want to learn them all.

Orca is very nice ship... It is not good for pews. As a all rounder (mining, missions, passengers, trading) is at best mediocre.

...you probably wonder why I consider it nice after all this.  The ship is very nice to fly and have good jump range and internal slots. But the best part comes last - it can outrun Mamba

I guess there is your answer why it is not popular in the min/max days.
