Elite: Game talk

SnapStrMy conda was hit several times in the mail slot by the blast wave. At 500 m/s isn't that scary? ))

It's point and shoot, just have to be sure it's no "large" debris on the way. Smaller ship have less chances to be caught in explosion, I was slamming the wall in, to say, 1 per 20 takeoffs or so. Had puny 4a shields, stored my 5a for bigger pax capacity, but even their amount is enough to keep the blue rings still blue (thanks to 4x shield boosters). So, the bottom line is - it's saving time. And fun too. :p

And don't forget, this Ferdie is on top 1% of wacky rescue vessels out there.

Lambast MercyI don't find much grind in the game anymore. When I decided I wanted something, I did what I needed to do to get it. It felt like progressing rather than grinding out materials. Through organic progression, I found tasks I liked or at least didn't mind repeating. Currently, I've got everything I wanted so now I just do enough to earn the weekly Arx.

Every now and then when I notice I'm running low on something, I go out and top up meaning I hardly ever have to spend an age doing something I'm not into. That's about as close as I get to grind and thanks to trying out many things, I've found time-efficient ways to get it done.

Now I slowly crawl towards 10 billion doing what I do each week. Once I'm there, I use the carrier to give someone with a need for credits and a good pitch a few billion. I look forward to getting to my self-imposed goal so can help out another commander. It gives me a meta-goal I enjoy working towards.

Pretty much this. Once you achieved your goals it is over. You play for fun or for whatever you find amusing.

The so called grind in E: D is when someone focus on one activity and repeat it. This is also amplified if you do activities to acquire stuff in unefficent way (example: farming materials at Dav's hope).

The CR grind... Especially for FC, is extreme if you try to achieve it in few weeks or even months. The game do not guide you through progression so if you not choose the optimal path and have unrealistic time constrained goals you are just grinding yourself.

P. S. Exploring the Galaxy in a sidewinder right after the start is another example of non-optimal path. Sakashiro, can speak a lot about it.

No, it's only "pretty much that" if you're all about having the best numbers and beating the game. If that's your thing, have at it.

I experienced Elite, I was in no rush to beat it like an opponent. I got something that occupies my time, not a time-sump to defeat. With most games I enjoy, there are no quests one has to do or paths the player must follow, it's up to the player to decide what to do. Making my own goals in the given sandbox is (for me) just as enjoyable as getting tangible in-game rewards.

That's just what i'm thinking of doing for my return from colonia, when that eventually happens. Efficiency is over rated.
Sidewinder should take about 750 jumps if I am direct (I won't be).

What was that quote about players optimizing the fun out of every game again?

interesting what you have all been saying about "the Grind" - I have always stuck with the notion of patience. Nothing ain't going no where!

I do a bit of this and a bit of that, and am slowly building wealth, some very fun ships, materials, ranks and none of it is a chore. The biggest grind for me is the actual travel in the game. Flying to Colonia on a random mission was fun to start with but by the 200th jump I was board as Fluff - that was the only time I felt this game was grindy.

If what ever game loop I am playing gets dull then I do something else.

I am in no rush to get to what ever the end goal is. I am just immersing myself in universe and having cheap thrills of flying in open at a CG....

The point. ED is a relatively much slower than any MMO stuff, it allows you to enjoy the process instead of constant riding a steam engine of progression with one day off putting you way behind any kind of opposition.

A rule that I have always followed is:

I play the game; I won't allow it to play me.

I purchased it to have fun; my game exists because of me.

If it ever stops being fun for me, as in, becomes a chore or an obligation, then it's time for me to either take a break from it or move on to something else entirely.

Whatever your age or available time, life is just too short to do otherwise.

TL;DR

Fun is #1.

Meowers
Sporbash Which passenger cabins do you need to pick them up?

Economy-class will do fine. It's a rescue operation, not some fancy tour.

But my sardines enjoyed a 500 m/s boost thru the mailslot just for fun. :p

Do you supply your sardines with sickbags, or...

Will they arrive packed in their own sauce?

Well, they asked for a fast ride... Anyone who I'll see whining is gonna be taken for a basic casual ordinary CZ combat, just one, just to have that awesome feelings that I have on regular. No volunteers so far!

I straight up just enjoy *existing* in the world of elite in VR. Sometimes I sit and watch station traffic with some comfy tunes. It's a nice form of escapism lol

It is a state of mind I suppose. Experience Elite, and progression happens as you spend time playing. Chase the upgrade or next expensive perchase, it becomes a grind.

I'm lucky I enjoyed (for the most part) my way to where I am. It wasn't a perfect experience and it still isn't, but there is far more I enjoy than annoyed me.

I like what people are saying about the grind and 90% of the time I'd go along with that.  In it for the long haul and as I am happy to point out to anyone who'll listen, rank and titles and money and even mats just build up over time whatever your gamestyle. Yeah it takes forever to reach elite in combat while elite in trade comes within a week of emergent gameplay. So it should, it won't make me head out to Pleiades with a target of 1500 scouts to kill just to achieve it.

For some people that is the point of the game and if so, then good luck to them. I get too easily bored for that and need to jump around.

For me, the game is most fun when I'm RPing my commander and unfortunately that means deep distrust of imps, feds and alliance. No pledging for me.  So, I cannot generally justify doing missions for them to gain rank. But when rescue missions come round and you can get 25% rank increase every run and unlock all the ships in a matter of days instead of weeks, I'd be a fool to pass up the chance. So, a little bit of a grind is worthwhile - for a good cause!
I mean, there's nothing forcing me to buy a cutter or corvette just because they're unlocked, is there?

ED's game design and pace allows people to form these states of mind (or smth in-between). Doubt it's possible to enjoy the game that you terribly suck at, because it meant to be played 36 hrs a day (or you will be a punching bag for everyone and everything). Same as doubt it's possible to take serious any game without perceptible progression at all, like some kind of time-killing 3-in-a-row mobile adware.

Quillmonkeyunfortunately that means deep distrust of imps, feds and alliance. No pledging for me.

that's a respectful nod from me on that statement
