To get this I had to forgo an SRV hangar -not a great idea out in the black when you may need to surface mine resources! No cargo space either.

And my observation is that the majority of the player base consider the hauler as cheap lidl ship worth only for some starting activities and being taxi to move you between actual ships.

I wanted to see if those claims were justified. A 60+ Ly Hauler is possible, but only on a near empty tank! And with limitations on it’s usefulness as an explorer. As for it out performing a DBX? Well, not according to this it doesn’t

EpisparhNo, I believe in stats. https://inara.cz/galaxy-statistics/

Im not a numbers guy. I'm good with that.
Stats have no place in subjective opinions. That's why opinions are opinions, and facts are facts.
I stood on my opinion that it is far from a terrible exploration ship. You have yet to apply enough 'stats' to my opinion to invalidate it. And your opening claim was subjective nonesense, that is obviously untrue. So what are you accomplishing here? Beating down a ship nobody likes? I don't know what happened to you in your first hauler, but this axe you're grinding says it was traumatic. Go back to your fleet carrier, and I'll enjoy my perfectly legitmate exploration Hauler

Having gone back, and re-reading the entire exchange, there isn't a single time that Otoha claimed it to be "the best".
Sakashiro claimed it to be "The greatest exploration ship ever misnamed.", but that's not claiming it to be the greatest exploration ship, or even the best exploration ship. She's stating that it is the greatest exploration ship ever given a misleading name. Think about it, Diamondback Explorer, Asp Explorer. They have exploration right in their name. The Adder, Cobra MKIII, Anaconda and whatever else just have unassuming snake names. In the case of the Hauler, it is named after it's supposed primary role. The Hauler isn't even that good of a hauler when you think about it.
From my perspective, this entire debate is occurring because of a misunderstanding. Nobody is claiming the Hauler to be the end all, be all of exploration vessels. Just that it is capable of doing so, and that it's much better at it than some would expect.
I personally took one out into the black years and years ago when I played on PC, and it was a blast. I made it around 2,500 ly out without any issues. This was before engineers, horizons, or anything like that, but even then it was a great cheap ship with a decent jump range.

One can't argue belief & personal preference.
Stats don't matter here IMO. Personal opinion does, & if someone believes a particular ship is better for their particular use, & that it's their preference, who's to disagree?
Personally, I wouldn't choose the Hauler as an exploration ship.
& that's my opinion, & that's OK too.

EpisparhAnd how is hauler better than DBX, AspX, Phantom, Anaconda and all other ships apart from being durty cheap with worthless transfer fee?
I think that a reasonably good explanation might come in the form of the mention that no one else seems to have picked up, that the player enjoys fitting ships out to do something for which they were never originally designed & with some tweaking, get them to do one thing reasonably well.
Might that be it?
In other words, a sewage truck can be fitted out to be a corner-carver or a dragster, neither of which was its original design. Hell, with enough tweaking, it might even be reasonably good at those things.
There are, ofc, far better ships, or corner-carvers or dragsters.

This is exactly why I outfitted and engineered a Viper Mk4 for the Small Worlds Expedition. It was capable of getting where I wanted to go, carrying what I thought I would need, and most importantly to me at the time, it was an unusual choice and a ship that I had fun flying.
*Edit - to add onto the Viper Mk4, there's a hidden factor in group content that can be missed. It's hull is the perfect wedge shape to act as a ramp for SRV's. The pilot deactivates shields, angles the nose right to the ground, with thrusters at 0, no landing gear, and just sits there. The other pilots can hop into their SRV's and have fun jumping off the Mk4.

Silver TafferThis is a Hauler/Explorer build I just whizzed up on EDSY. Yes, it can get to 63Ly but only on minimum fuel. The unladen range, which is more practical, is just under 57Ly.
This is how I would build it. 62 Ly unladen.
Of course for exploration and mats gathering you'd want at least an SRV as well. And then it's only 51 Ly unladen. Still impressive for a class 2 FSD though.

Otoha. Because that's what video games are about, fun. Not build links and spreadsheets
Like when our Squad all took the much reviled Asp Scout, with zero engineering, no shields and only station supplied modules then had a Demo Derby bash. Absolutely hilarious

i love how you guys think! Now THAT sounds like a good time. I feel like we should be allies, got room for another squadron alliance for sh*ts and giggles?

EpisparhThis one for example: My DBX - Tanuki
It is not even outfitted for exploration.
There's one good reason why one might prefer the Hauler over a DBX: the fuel scoop.
The DBX has a class 5 FSD but can only fit class 4 fuel scoops. The Hauler on the other hand can use fuel scoops of a higher class than its FSD. The result: scooping one jump worth of fuel takes twice as long on the DBX. This means for a complete refill the DBX has to slow down when scooping from red dwarfs. The Hauler can pass by at full throttle because it'll be fully replenished after 5 seconds.

For example: The Robigo Mines missions are great for cash or material rewards but the missions tend to cap at 8 passenger per mission and I'd like closer to 16/mission.
