Thanatos au GrimmusSynthya WylderHoleyMcMoleyI'm pondering buying a carrier, but I'm confused by a few suggestions I've seen that it could make it quicker to get to Colonia.
Either this isn't the case or I'm totally misunderstanding carrier jumps.
The wiki says that there's a 15 minute preparation and a 5 minute cooldown. So: no more than 3 jumps per hour, at <= 500 ly each.
That's nearly 15 hours of non-stop jumping to get to Colonia, i.e. massively slower than a normal ship can do it even without neutron-jumping.
So I guess people probably aren't intending to imply that carriers can get to Colonia quicker?
Although I don't own a carrier, I wouldn't get one just for the sake of jumping large distances quickly. The only thing I can see that no other ship can do (think of carriers like your very own mobile station, they're not actually a ship per se) is that they can make a 500 ly jump.
Most decently-built & equipped ships can outpace a carrier, & cost a HUGE amount less to own & operate.
Just my opinion & thoughts on the matter. I'm sure others who actually own a carrier will chime in.
I don't own a carrier, but I did crunch a few numbers that might interest you. A one way trip to Colonia consumes about 11,000 tons of Tritium (more or less depending on how much cargo). 11,000 tons of Tritium is worth about 500M credits.
Thanks for the feedback folks.
I'll probably dip a toe in and perhaps then sell it if I don't enjoy the experience, since it seems to be the case that getting in and out of ownership should cost me well under a billion in lost cash (once I get my 5 billion back of course ).
On the fuel consumption - oh dear! The Wiki appears to be in pretty serious need of attention then - I had estimated more like 3000 tons of tritium (using the wiki statement that an empty carrier needs 68 tons per 500 ly jump).
