SakashiroYou can explore in any type of ship, even a Sidewinder will do. DBX, AspX and Anaconda are popular choices because they can jump quite far if engineered and optimized for low weight. But a Krait Phantom will be fine, too.
Hear, hear.
That is the difference between travelling and exploring. o7

Anyway, low jump range and small fuel tanks can lead to some issues with unscoopable star patches and regions where stars are more scarce (outer, between the "rims", etc).

In my early days I was crazy enough to visit Sag-A in an unengineered Sidewinder, so anything I say about exploration ships should probably be taken with a huge grain of salt.

True. If you go towards the center, there won't be many problems because star density increases. But if you go towards the edges, you'll want to be able to jump as far as possible. And always be careful not to pass the point of no return!

What is it around 1% of systems explored? So much missed with the huge jump ranges.*
I am grateful for them though. So o7 to them too!
*handy on the way back though...

Yup. Had a hard time finding a proper entrance to Elysian Shore sector. Damn, I wish I knew about additional fuel tanks these days :p

OtohaAs long as you're not intending to go to the edge of the galaxy, or places in general where the stars really spread out, then anything with about 25ly give or take is plenty for an exploration ship. Hence my personal use of a Hauler for the task. It's not about jump range, it's about exploring and in that case the more jumps you do the better, how far doesn't matter
The Hauler can actually jump remarkably far if engineered and equipped with a class 3 FSD booster. As an exploration ship it is not bad at all.

The downside of adding fuel tanks is that the galaxy map will always calculate routes based on your jump range with all tanks full. And there is no convenient way to jettison fuel.

Exactly, you do not need to go to the edge of the galaxy, to find uncharted systems. Just go off the beaten track and not straight toward something well known.
It is about the journey, not the destination.
Huge o7 for doing it in an Hauler. Nice little ship.
