I'm somewhat tempted to reset my alt account and start a playthrough without engineering. No materials, no grind, just ships and modules and missions and money to buy better ships and modules. Experience the game the way it was before engineers were a thing. Will it be worse or better?

So I've finally saved the recommended 7 bil cr to buy and run an FC... now I'm getting cold feet! Seems like a lot to take on after the carefree days of living out of a fully furbished space station!

Hmmmmmm.......


Do it. Best thing ever is my opinion.

Makes the game and your(as in my) play options so much more relaxed.


I now dispise the constrictions of not having one on my epic alt...

Thanks for the reassurance Vis. It's been a long grind to get to this point! I'm still hovering over the BUY button right now!

Worse? Better? Hmmm, I would say harder.
Before Engineers were introduced nobody had enhancements on their modules, NPC’s included, which made for a level playing field.

Now you will find even NPC’s have engineered modules in certain instances, let alone other Cmdrs. So Combat will be harder. With un-engineered modules in an Explorer build your survivability and jump range will suffer, so exploration is harder.

True, the material ‘grind’ is no longer a necessity, not to mention the Engineers unlock procedure but, as someone mentioned earlier, it’s only a grind if you allow it to become one

Actually most of the grind in engineering happens in grade 5, because that's where you need all the high grade materials, and that's also where diminishing returns set in when rolling the dice, where you need like ten attempts just to get from 80% to 100% completion.

So maybe I shouldn't go entirely without engineering but limit myself to grade 3 mods. Still better than nothing, but much less grindy.

Before leaping in and resetting, just buy a few unengineered ships and see how you get along playing with them.

I have a vanilla T7 in my fleet that does passenger stuff, and squad piracy training. Its not an awful thing to fly and do things in, and i have no need to engineer it up.

They can work fine, you just have to be realistic as to what you want to do with them.

That’s my usual practice. Apart from FSD which is worth the effort to G5 from the start. As I use each ship I can decide which modules need maximum engineering and which don’t and in the former case I can keep an eye out for the necessary resources and gather them as the opportunity presents itself.
Hey presto - no grind I also have a Wake Scanner equipped on several of my mission based ships and scan wakes for a few minutes outside busy stations every so often. Works for me 07

This is pretty much exactly what I did. Limited engineering and just a single ship (cobra for the nostalgic Elite feel). I use it a lot when my main account is in the black so that I can go pew-pews instead of going mental. It's never going to be the greatest flyer but for a pick-up-and-play it's really good fun.
I agree, not worse or better but different.
I do tend to die a lot more but having only the one ship and no engineering or tech brokers to pursue, money is hardly a problem.

KurakilPersonally I don't consider relogging to be an exploit. I had typed out a long paragraph but here is the short version:
If various aspects/mechanics of the game were well designed, I think most players would not bother with exploits in the first place, since the game would have good pacing/progression by default.


This is subjective. You will never please everyone as everyone has different expectations, and I would argue that that isn't a worthy goal in and of itself due to tragedy of the commons. As a business their goal is to keep as many happy as they can and be profitable and when looking at the result, I think they've accomplished that.

I've got very little engineering on my ships. I've never been interested in "The Grind".... for money, mats or naval rankings. I've just enjoyed the "vanilla" side of it. I've never felt like I'm missing out and haven't hit any real roadblocks.

I've got way more credits than I need so I just take INF+++ or material rewards from missions.

I've not mined an ounce in game as the look of mining doesn't interest me. FCs is probably going to remain a part of the game that I won't use as I won't grind for money (there's a mom joke in there). That said, I mainly do BGS so all my ships are nearby anyway.

The only thing that I suppose I could be missing out on is Imperial ships as there's no Imp factions nearby. I got Admiral in the Fed ranks just from doing BGS work, raising local factions. But those Imp ships are too pretty for my RP anyway.

All in all, I've done zero grinding and just enjoyed the game. I play a lot and still love it and I put it down to the fact that grinding is self inflicted. I work hard in RL, the last thing I'd want to do is work at something that's supposed to be there to have fun with.

I will add that I don't PvP, I'm guessing it'll probably be essential there but, as I said, not my bag.

I don't find much grind in the game anymore. When I decided I wanted something, I did what I needed to do to get it. It felt like progressing rather than grinding out materials. Through organic progression, I found tasks I liked or at least didn't mind repeating. Currently, I've got everything I wanted so now I just do enough to earn the weekly Arx.

Every now and then when I notice I'm running low on something, I go out and top up meaning I hardly ever have to spend an age doing something I'm not into. That's about as close as I get to grind and thanks to trying out many things, I've found time-efficient ways to get it done.

Now I slowly crawl towards 10 billion doing what I do each week. Once I'm there, I use the carrier to give someone with a need for credits and a good pitch a few billion. I look forward to getting to my self-imposed goal so can help out another commander. It gives me a meta-goal I enjoy working towards.

Immersiveness and lore of Elite universe are giving a great chance to interpret many "grind" activities as something having a sense and a purpose. Eg., you're not grinding rep, you're rescuing civilians, transporting cargo to wherever it's in demand, all that kind of "space captain stories" stuff. My activity now can be seen as "grinding combat rank", but I prefer to see it like "roaming around the galaxy, helping some factions of choice (depends on their ideas and allegiances) with their local conflicts" and hey, it's definitely much more interesting thing to do than pew-pew-pew with one eye staring at progress bar.

Just give your playing process a bit more love and fantasy and voila. Anyway, ED isn't a fast-paced game like majority of "massive multiplayer online" stuff, you don't have to push forward 36 hours a day to retain your standings. Yup, BGS may be exhausting sometimes, but... Again, get a free day or two and let yourself to dip into a bloody war of attrition. Then enjoy the cooldown with a sense of accomplishment.

But I still can't imagine anything that will justify the material grind anyway, so let it be a necessary evil. :p Fortunately, I won't be doing this anytime soon, as my engineering is ~90% done (with auxiliary stuff left without upgrades, such as FSD interdictors, manifest scanners, etc).

Maybe I'm just getting old, because I'm no new person to determination in game process.

p.s. If someone isn't amused by the process of playing Elite, and just do "chasing the higher numbers" like in another random MMO thing... That's strange. It's a slow, comfy game, where you can rush forward only when you want to.

I think the reason to be able to play the game the way you do is down to your ability to immerse yourself in it. In the gameplay itself.

Economy-class will do fine. It's a rescue operation, not some fancy tour.

But my sardines enjoyed a 500 m/s boost thru the mailslot just for fun. :p

My conda was hit several times in the mail slot by the blast wave. At 500 m/s isn't that scary? ))
