WaylongwayThe possibility of a virus can't be ruled out, but it wouldn't be my first thought with these symptoms.

But AV scans do cause high load on the disk drive and sometimes also CPU. If you had two virus scanners installed, like Burstar mentioned, I'd directly point at it. Do you have E:D installed on a SSD or conventional HDD?

You could try to disable your virus scanner (Windows Defender) during the time you play E:D and enable it afterwards again. Perhaps, it can also be configured to stop all scanning activity when a game is running. It's highly unlikely to catch a virus through the game.

The video obviously shows his cpu and gpu going to 100% thats bitcoin farming...it happens when you go to a site you're not supposed to and catch a bot, at least the way that video looks for me indicates  that it has NOTHING to do with his internet or connectivity nor packet-loss issues, there is something sucking all the resources from the CPU/GPU in spikes...only one thing does that...BITCOIN FARMING, you are being farmed. MY solution when it has happened to me is a fresh install of the Operating system with a high level format and bran new partitioning. When i have tried to pluck it with every other resource i have tried out there from others, it has alleviated the symptoms, but never fixed the problem. ONLY formating, new partition, and reinstalling Operating system will FOR SURE AND WITHOUT A DOUBT, fix all problems. It is tedious work to reinstall everything again, but at least you do so knowing you have basically a bran new pc. Anything arises after that then its actual hardware problems.

If you've got an old school HDD, has it been defragmented recently? I think Win 10 defrags every now & again automatically, but if it's been a while, and especially if there's not much free space left, the HDD can go mental.

The stutter you see in the video is not a result of CPU or GPU load, but disk activity. Run ED while Windows 10 is installing updates, and you will see exactly this stutter. Run ED while your AV scanner checks files, you'll see this stutter. Alt-Tab ED to the background when it is stuttering, open the task manager, you'll see 100% disk activity.

Even if the stutter was caused by CPU or GPU load (which it isn't), your conclusion that there must be a bitcoin farm running in the background is pure conjecture. There are plenty of other possible causes for high CPU or GPU load.

And finally, based on incomplete information, you recommend repartitioning and a full reinstall of the OS and all applications, no less.

Bottom line: When people who fail to keep malware off their PCs tell others how to fix their PC problems, caution is advised.

plenty of other reasons yes, however most common is spider sucking gpu resources, everything you explained as possible reasons yes you are correct , if its an hdd, disk activity may cause some stutter, but not the consistent spikes we see in video like that ( unless like you said an update was running which i dont think it was the case)... in my experience this i have seen many times and he will end up after doing everything everyone else tells himto do, what i said he should do to begin with. Because in the end its the only thing thats gonna give him clarity on what the actual problem is, and he can't do that with a cluttered and fragmented old school drive. About your last comment, you have no clue from what standing I speak when i do so. I will exclude myself and you can all go and keep trying to help a case that will end up in format/repartition/reinstall. I now exclude myself from YOUR conversation, --you're the boss lady/guy/thing, guide him with those great google skills, let me know when you want to listen to actual experience on the field.

Doubt CPU/GPU are going to 100% load, he still had some sounds on a background, they wasn't freezing. Perhaps an overlay of resource load and FPS meter on video could clear things up. But performing a clean install right now (and at every other unresolved problem) is a waste of time, it can take up to 3-4 days of creating the same environment that was before. Some work software can be a pain to reinstall and reconfigure properly, depends on what's this PC is used for other than playing (with developer software being a pinnacle of pain in the butt, if he does that thing).

OS reinstalling surely and without a doubt fix the software issues... If they wasn't caused by software itself... And it will give a few hours/days of new issues of reinstalling/downloading everything again.

p.s. Complete reinstall is a good measure to some FUBAR situations, but I've never seen a person who tried to use a PC that was brought to a verge of that condition. Generally people starting to worry about "this thing is acting odd" before littering up everything completely.

Quillmonkey... and no, I wouldn't use any other AV program, bloody snake oil salesmen.

Enough time on this now, fly and enjoy, CMDRs. Thanks for your help. If I can't get it fixed with a fresh install, I'll get in touch with fDev. - it did start on a Thursday afternoon just after their weekly update. What have they put in the code this week?

I wouldn't call some AV programs snake oil. Having experienced a virus or two in my lifetime I can attest that the AV protection that Windows provides is both basic and the first thing the Virus creators try to circumvent because it's ubiquitous. I would use a free system checker from a paid product (like Housecall for example) because they are incentivised to find something, anything, if it's there and is the best way to rule out the possibility of a virus. Most AV companies with a paid product have a free detection AND cleaning tool available and they are definitely better than Defender.

Anyways good luck CMDR o7

As for everyone else, the only thing foolish with problems like this is to be absolutely certain you have the right answer. The best you can do is lead the horse to a place water is normally found, hope it's there and the horse drinks.

Got some strange behaviour now. Entered a CZ, but combatants aren't seem to be appearing anywhere. Relogged, FSDd in and out, no effect, combat zone full of dangerous nothing.
Tried one nearby, no effect. Had a message "Warning, entering CZ" on approach, jumped out of SC as usual at 10km distance, nobody around.

Maybe they're saying "dammit, have a break already" that way.

It could be the BGS server, but I'd double check the Faction states to make sure they're still at war.

Good Morning all Commanders.

Was doing a bit of CG'ing last night. There a new Commander in chat going on about his shiny new Anaconda that he had ground hard for and left himself a 100,000 credits but was gonna be alright by the trucking all three of the CGs...

... that was until he got stuck in the toast rack and destroyed by the station and did not have the funds for a rebuy....

Poor Commander was back in his Sidewinder - having learnt how to waste a month of your time....

Does anyone know if I will load the gun at the station whether the remaining premium ammunition will become basic ammo

Rearming strips ammunition of any premium bonuses and resets them to default ammo.

On the AV topic, herdProtect & Malwarebytes is something I've used as a check/follow-up/confirmation if I ever suspect any malware on my machine, after my usual scans.

Thankfully, I've never had any major issues. When I'm not using my machine for any intensive activities like gaming, I run BOINC & Folding@Home in the background & donate the number-crunching to their projects in a shared computing grid.

I have both set to "Idle on use" in case I forget to pause them manually.

Wishing you success in finding a resolution.
