RaybansHi All,

I'm pretty new to the game a few weeks in have left the Pilots federation and have purchased an ASP Explorer. My Jump distance is about 22Ly but I'm a bit lost to be honest. I love the game but unsure of what to do. I've joined a Squadron and am trying to make my way to their home system. I think some of the jumps will be too far.

I did the old high res trick and earned a cool 10 mill which went on my Explorer and a new Jump drive 5B and some other bits.

I just need some general help as I'm not sure what to do other than some missions here and there to try and buy better equipment for longer jumps. I was hoping to speak to my Squad but unsure of how to communicate with them. There so many videos and stuff to read but not sure where to start.

HELP a commander all alone in the dark.

Well, I guess your next steps will largely depend on what you ultimately want to do in the long run: Are you more interested in combat, exploration or trading?
It most certainly will not hurt to get yourself an A-graded frameshift drive asap either way and get it engineered as jumprange is most certainly useful no matter what you want to do in the long run. So maybe go and visit Dav's Hope?

First try to make a contact with your squadron.
You may try to find them here https://inara.cz/squadrons/. If the squadron is present in the list there is a good chance the leadership will respond to direct message via inara. Some squadrons even post their discords or other means to communicate.

As for starter CR there are few options:

In case anyone is jumping to conclusions, that wasn't me. I've had my Mamba only for a couple of weeks.

Besides, I'd never take a 17 Ly jump range ship on a... oh wait... never mind.

I think the Mamba had Ike 30-36ly jump range.

Do I need to upgrade my scanner and do I need to fly to all planets in the system to get a full scan?

Just double-checked. It can actually do 43 Ly!

I suppose you are talking about Road to Riches. You will need a Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS) to scan valuable bodies from the list (Example: B 2 a - means star B , body 2 , moon 1). When you arrive in the system - honk, doing Full Spectrum Scan (FSS) is optional. Then open system map and select the body and supper cruise until you see DSS change to "Too Fast" then you do a full stop in super cruise and fire DSS probes to surface map the body. All this will net you roughly 500k-1m per scanned body.

Once you get enough credits just follow others' advises to get your ship setup with A rated FSD and some other modules. AspX is good starter multi role ship you can do anything with it. Fully upgraded it will cost you around 35-33mil total depending on the build.

You should also consider unlocking some engineers and guardian modules (Guardian FSD booster being the most valuable)

Other than the cost, why not use a Krait MK II instead of the Phantom?

Mary QuinnHi there! Newbie question about explorations ship. I like my Diamondback Explorer, but I think it's a little too cramped for the modules. And I like very much the Falcon Delacy ships, so... is the Krait Phantom a good exploration ship? Take in consideration: I'm a recent commander, I've my pilot licence from just 1 month now. Thank you for your advices!

Sorry for the late reply, I hope my comments will still be relevant. Personally, I love the Kraits, the Mk 2 is my favourite ship and the phantom carried me to Elite exploration. Plenty space for everything you will need - just make sure you budget for a 6A fuel scoop. Jump range is not the be-all and end-all, just aim for at least 40Ly and enjoy the journey. Sensors only need to be D rated, but make sure you can use the FSS efficiently and a Detailed Surface Scanner is essential. Take along a couple of SRV’s for surface prospecting.
Good luck and have fun in the black.

Phantom is lighter AKA faster/jump further.

Hi CMDR and o7. The DBX is a great explorer and so are the ASPX and the Krait Phantom. You won't go wrong with any of them! I use the ASPX. It's the ultimate explorer for me. The Phantom is a great looking ship mind and in a stable with the Krait MkII you have a couple of ships that can do most everything in a med size. If you are accustomed to Coriolis engineering app:

You can put together a build and post it here for critique by very experienced players like Epi, Saka and co. Then adjust your build accordingly.

Though some folk find the fighter hangar a higher priority to jump range in which case maybe they’d be tempted with the mk II but for me, the point of a mk II is the weapon coverage and for exploration you’ll be taking all weapons off your ship so it doesn’t make so much sense.
In the end it’s whatever you like flying coz you’ll be spending lots of time in it.
