Synthya WylderMeowersIs there any sense and reason to go exploring with something in your cargo bay?
I'll usually go exploring with at least a few limpets in my cargo hold, just in case I happen to pop into a system in the middle of 2 or more close-orbiting stars, & that has happened.
I've never had or used a AMFU (yet) & if things got that bad, I can always re-boot to repair as needed & limp somewhere that I can get a complete repair. AFMU won't repair the hull, though, hence why I do equip a repair module & at least a few limpets - their mass doesn't deduct that much from my jump range & I'd rather save my materials synthesizing limpets if I happen to need them. I consider it a small price to pay.
If you get caught in a star sandwich and overheat, your internal modules will start taking damage at 100% heat, and your hull will start melting at 150%. So you'll need an AFMU before you need hull repair limpets. But what's worse, the cargo hatch will fail first, so you'll likely lose those limpets before there is any hull damage for them to repair.
Another tip: If you have a supercruise assist module equipped, disable hyperspace dethrottle. Because when you get into a star sandwich, there's usually a star behind you that is too close and heats you up without you realizing it. If you enter the system at 100% throttle, you are more likely to escape before heat levels get critical.
