If system chat and official forums are any indication a lot of people usually siding with the Feds joined the Empire for this one as they don't like it that the Federation is heading into outright fascist territory lately and/or disagree with this unjustified act of aggression by the Federation.

EpisparhCMDRs do not usually support invading forces. The story is quite BS. The reward is meh (especially after the top paying CG).
And it is not Empire vs Feds but Nova Imperium, a squadron supported MF vs some unknown backwater MF.
