This makes it sound like I won't be successful running Elite on a Linux system. Is that true?

It seems unlikely it is written for Windows and FDEV drop development of console version because they couldn't keep up with multiple platforms,

If you must have Linux and Elite on a single machine you either need dual boot, or to have a windows virtual machine running on Linux KVM hypervisor.
...but there will be overheads from running a virtual machine, so will be slower than running on native windows.

I'm growing weary of Windows and have long used Linux for many things other than gaming. Considering how much I enjoy and play Elite Dangerous, I would hate to convert my gaming system to Linux only to find out I can't run Elite. (Not to mention VR compatibility.)

I run it on Steam Deck, which has Steam OS and is based on KDE Plasma. Since the advent of Proton, Linux gaming is on par with Windows gaming for most of the time, and games like Cyberpunk 2077 run probably even better on Linux.

So, I ran into an instance of Elite breaking especially spectacularly today, possibly worse than Titans in Open. The ridiculous AX bots with their braindead (or brainless) pathing somehow managed to drag three or four Cyclops (and three Scouts) way up from one of the surface ports attacked around Cocijo, about 52 kilometers away. And what I found was a complete shitshow of bugs where the human NPCs were just flying like they were drunk not shooting at anything, and the Thargoid NPCs were completely stuck slowly flying downward at less than 100 m/s, had almost no audio, would not respond if you shoved yourself in their faces and blasted them with shard cannons, Cyclops deployed no shields or special attacks when they got a heart broken off...

One of the Cyclops eventually got to about 45 kilometers where its normal behavior resumed, then it strayed past what I will now call the "Glitch Line" and displayed the above symptoms until I put it out of its misery. It was a solo play instance too so connection could hardly have played a role in it... but it also had a bunch of diver Cyclops under the surface.

Perfectly functional game with no issues.
