Oh, you think that there will be something after Odyssey? How cute is that.
30 Jun 2021, 10:07pm
Well, they obviously changed the whole planetary tech not "just because", but with the future in mind (bigger flexibility with the "biomes", terrain "stamps" to create distinct terrain features, reworked clutter system, etc.). I can imagine they did it especially for the full atmosphere planets, vegetation, and so on and it may be relatively low-hanging fruit now. So yeah, unless something really bad happen and they will scratch the plans, there will be stuff after Odyssey.

Isaiah EvansonZero-g combat should be the next thing. And that means they'd need ship interiors.

Unfortunately my faith in Frontier is such that I presume that will not happen.

I start to think FDev doesn't do a lot of promises for the same reason Cyberpunk 2077 flopped: shareholders. In case of Cyberpunk however it was mostly caused by devs being forced into releasing half-baked game - despite clear signals ever since January 2020 that deadlines were unrealistic - with superiors pushing marketing to the limits while threatening their own stuff with lay offs at the same time. While I think FDev wouldn't do something as screwed as CDPR's management/shareholders did (because I bet the British law is less employer-hostile than the Polish one has been for decades thanks to various lobbies) - or rather not on such a grand scale.

They already hyped Odyssey and look where we are. The console ports were supposed to be released month from now but with what happens now it is very unlikely.

I don't know much about the Cyberpunk release or its developer. But if you put your business hat on you can find the answer to the premature Odyssey release here:

https://www.frontier.co.uk/investors/financial-calendar

Braben took a calculated risk of bad press vs a healthy revenue for 2020/2021 in spite of COVID pressures, to publish in the September AR and to impress his investors at the October AGM.

You see these guys here?

https://www.frontier.co.uk/investors/shareholder-information

They don't give a toss about FPS rates, ship interiors, VR or angry nerds screaming dooooom.

Braben delivered what they want, so they will maintain their investment, and Frontier keeps chugging along.

Yeah, we sadly don't live in a world where quality of the product is top priority, as long as the numbers are correct.

Although that still makes me wonder why video game shareholders do not really care about the quality anymore. Bad opinions about the product = less money; Good opinions = more money. But again here we go back into VERY dangerous area of developers being crunched to achieve quality/deadlines - and the circle goes on.

Quality isn't necessarily a required ingredient toward commercial success. Just look at the 50 Shades of Grey saga. Stupid to the point of insulting the reader but it made the writer and publisher millions.

Unless something really bad happens? I thought we were well past that point already.

Steam reviews of the people who actually bought the game - 26% positive. Every aspect of the game is broken more than a month since release. And when I say every, it is literally not just EDO stuff but basic things that worked perfectly. Example: FA off in EDO.
The release is such a disaster that Frontier will have the team work for months to fix that and this was visible by their development update. Honesty, it looks for me that they are slapping patches over patches on that boat to buy time.

After today's patch the focus will be on console release and you better hope they pull it somehow up. With the current performance and wonky optimizations it is obvious the foundation of the code is in bad shape, so expect more delays. If they cannot deliver to old gen consoles by mid 2022 I bet they will pull their usual Frontier and leave everything as it is.

We are well beyond the point of "something really bad".

It may seem that way to you from a gamer's perspective but as I said, Swedbank Robur et al aren't going to see it that way. They'll look at this:

When that green line turns red and is lower than the previous year, that's when the investors will believe "something really bad" has happened.

You know that they do not have only E: D as product, right? Plus they were consuming relative good reception of their work till now. And with those stock things if you wait for the line to turn red it is little too late.
Odyssey is fail of an epic proportions that sends a clear message about development practices in their iconic product.

That's like saying, we jumped off the 30th floor, but nothing really bad has happened until our bodies hit the pavement.

Yep, well aware of that.

Sure, and if the investors see it that way, then the game's future may certainly be in question.

I wonder what the bugs fixed/introduced ratio will be with this update?
01 Jul 2021, 7:47am
Hey guys.

I have BGS question.

Is it possible to affect the population of a system, through keeping happiness, economy and security high?

And then, a follow up question. If so, does increased population help to create new starports in system?

Thanks.

I believe the populations are fixed and can't be affected by players.
