No idea then. Probably bug #16724 I suppose.

I'm sorry.

Darth Bozi And I do need a diversion after spending 3 weeks grinding Empire rank in Naginn, don't think I want to see another "smuggle in the data so we can manipulate our enemies" kind of thing for a while.

Deep Charge isn't worth it for any ship imo. The slight increase in jumprange it can give over Mass Manager isn't worth the increased fuel consumption. Mostly because the ships that DC gives the greater jump range to also have cruddy Fuel Scoops that exacerbate the issue.

As for rank grinding. My go to choice for that is passenger rescue missions on burning stations which have at least one superpower faction on them. For example, this latest NMLA bombing event may be good for Fed Rep atm. The gameplay is unique, can be a fun challenge if you're in an unengineered ship not specialised for the task, and the turnaround can't be beat. The only issue is that the events that allow this are relatively rare, and lately there have been bugs that break it (megaships flying into planets, stations in out of control orbits so landing is much harder, mission refresh delays/fails). Food for thought.

every time i go to shin an npc is doing something they shouldnt i have 3 images. ^this one looks like a conda has mounted a type 9, i have a cobra just not moving in the mailslot and i have a scout literally stuck. one time i dont htink in shin tho i had a sidewinder trying to become one with a scout, i had to lightly boop them with my cutter to get them to move out my way.

Ah yes, a hardcore Type-9 on Anaconda action.

So, there I am, puttering about in my SRV (practice for when I finally do the Guardian Ruins and grab me that sweet, sweet GPP, you see), when I decide to also try my hand at surface mining for some raw mats (apparently every engineer I’m interested in talking to and their mothers are in dire need of sulphur for some reason…well, at least Tod is, after he FINALLY started returning my calls; what are they using it for?). I throw on some Credence Clearwater Revival, head to the nearest raw mat spawn, and just chill out as I roam around to scoop up the mat drops when I’m presented with an…uncomfortable question:

Is surface mining for raw mats really more efficient than just regular asteroid mining? Because if it isn’t, I really don’t wanna spend the dosh on snatching/outfitting a mining ship but have that sinking feeling that I might need to.

So I pass the question to you: Which is more efficient for grinding raw mats? Surface mining or asteroid mining? And if the answer is asteroid mining, which ship should I grab and how should I outfit it to maximize the pain I must endure? (Keep in mind that I’m primarily a PvE bounty hunter and have no patience for staring at rocks all day)

Fastest way to grind raw mats (only works in Horizons): HIP 36601 system. You'll grind all the grade 5 raw mats, then go to a material trader to down trade them for the others. Do this twice and you'll max out all raw materials.

To my knowledge, it doesn't work in Odyssey because when scanning planet surfaces, you no longer get "biological signatures" or "biological sites" anymore.

While asteroids do drop some raw mats, there are a few that you can find on surfaces only, as far as I know.

I’m starting to become aware of that, but what I’m asking is which is more efficient.

I think I might’ve bookmarked that system; will have to check later. And don’t worry about me having Odyssey; I’m on PS4, it doesn’t come out until the fallish.

I'm not sure how to quantify the efficiency of gathering raw materials. Surface prospecting requires only a SRV and can be done anywhere, at any time. I usually gather materials on demand. It gives me a reason to land on planets and drive across their terrain, which is fun and never feels grindy. I can sell the mapping data later, and by hopping out of the SRV for a moment I also earn the first footfall credit.

I never bothered to fill my materials inventory up entirely, because that makes it feel like work. It may be more efficient though.
