MAVERICKbirdyTL;DR: I’ve started engineering my ship. I’m in need of advice on how to best proceed from here. Send help.

I'm not sure if replying to a 4-day old post counts as a necro, but if so, sorry

You've already had some answers pointing you in the right direction with engineering, but they've maybe been a bit more "do this", and not "do this because <insert reason here>".

The first question you should ask yourself with engineering is "Why?". Why are you engineering your ship? Why that module? Why choose that effect?

Some questions answer themselves. More FSD range = less time spent jumping around, so it's a no-brainer. Other questions you need to answer yourself, so you can decide what engineering to focus on.

For example: As Sakashiro said, your shields are very weak. They could be improved by engineering, or by swapping your point defence or KWS for shield boosters, as suggested by Karinka. But, do you need to? Do you have to wait between fights to recharge your shields, or run away from combat? If so, improve your defence. If not, wait until you start fighting stronger enemies, and do it then.

Once you know what you want to focus on, learn to use tools like Coriolis or EDSY to help you compare possible improvements, and Google for suggested builds. Play around - choose different engineering options and compare the numbers. The suggestions from Karinka and Episparh are all good, but it's best to know why you're doing something, not just blindly follow

If you want some specific feedback for immediate improvements:

1) Your shields are very weak against thermal damage (as Sakashiro said), and you'll take a lot of that in PvE. If you don't have problems with your shields then you can ignore this for now, but shield boosters are a big part of any optimised combat build, and you might be better off with thermal resistant engineering on your shields.
2) You don't need point defence. If you're PvE bounty hunting you don't get attacked by missiles much, and don't need to protect a cargo hold full of goods. The obvious switch is for shield boosters.
3) Ditch the spare fuel tank. You already have a big fuel scoop, there's no way you should need another tank of fuel.
4) Don't worry about the Guardian power plant. Your first Guardian modules should be the frame shift booster, and then maybe the shield booster, but for your Krait you don't "need" either of them. The FSD booster is a big quality of life improvement across your entire fleet.

But most importantly of all - just have fun! If what you're doing now is fun, just enjoy doing it! Leave worrying about all this stuff until shooting down the same old enemies gets old, and you want to crank things up. There's no rush

Recently I discovered an interesting bug in the galaxy map. I was traveling to an engineer and had plotted a route filtered for scoopable stars. But when I charged the FSD for a jump to LHS 102, the info panel said the target was a class L star (brown dwarf). I canceled the jump and looked at the galaxy map. LHS 102 was shown as a system with a class M star. So I performed the jump to see what I would find. And indeed, I was dropped in front of a brown dwarf! But the weirdness didn't end there. The name of the brown dwarf displayed on the HUD wasn't LHS 102 but Gliese 1001 B! There was another star in the system, and that was an actual class M. It was more than 10,000 Ls away and displayed as "Undiscovered". Together they were forming a binary pair.

Maybe I got it all wrong. Maybe it was actually a gate to Raxxla, and I just didn't understand the hints. But considering the state of the game, I guess a bug is more likely.

You know, brown dwarf happens.
But otherwise, it looks like some problem with the different star catalogue names/aliases (Gliese 1001 = LHS 102) for the same star system, causing this problem on the star map.

Artie
Edit: There was indeed some problem with the "landable" flag not being set sometimes. I made a fix and updated around 13k celestial bodies with the proper flags. More will be updated during the regular updates, when missing. Thank you for bringing this into my attention.

I can now see a whole lot of them popping up in the search panel. Many thanks.

Yeah, it's clear that she jumped into brown dwarf which has the greatest mass of stellar bodies within this system. You always drop at the most massive star. The red dwarf here is lighter but obviously much more luminant, therefore system name is derived from this brighter star, as observed first (propably in infrared), and named by people living on Earth. Brown dwarfs' discovery era begun much later. So we have catalogue differences.

Had that situation occured in many systems. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

But that means galaxy map and FSD disagree on what the system's main star is. GalMap: "It's the brighter one." FSD: "It's the heavier one."

If I filter for scoopables, I expect to be dropped in front of a scoopable star.

Yep, dropping near the brown dwarf is definitely alright, but displaying the second of those binary stars as the "main" star on the galaxy map not so much (especially with the "scoopable" preference set). It's confusing at best.

And it's rare. I had this happen not once during my trip to Beagle and back.

GalMap was not wrong, it dropped you into the right place - there actaully is a scoopable in the system. Dwarf happens.
I had this happened in many LHS/LTT/GLIESE places.

"This edition of the galaxy map was brought to you by the Fuel Rats. We have fuel. You don't. Any questions?"

According to galaxy map, I have found something very annoying.

Once upon a time, there was a little nebula. It was called Messier 16, the other name: Eagle Nebula.

It is beautiful.
So, I have found this cluster of over 460 white stars, located within the nebula:

According to current knowledge, approximate age of the Eagle Nebula is no more than 5.5 million years.
Here is system map of one of the stars of abovementioned cluster:

Which gives us information on star's age: over 2 billion years old.
So, the cluster of young stars located in starbirth area which nebulas usually are, cannot be as old.

Conclusion: it is only a typo. It says 2,310 million years, while it should be 2.310 million years.

Now,
it's just a minor mistake, it doesn't harm anyone right?

No.
If this star is only 2 million years old, there would be not enough time required for formation of these planets.

BurstarMy preferred grind to Ship Combat Elite is Pirate Activity: Threat 6s. 100% of your opponents are ranked Deadly so there's no wasted time, and occasionally you get a bug where pre-Horizons ship can spawn which are basically freebies.

I went looking for those and found one in a civil unrest system. It was threat level 5, but all the NPCs were deadly and engineered, with phasing sequence lasers. I managed to pop three Anacondas and one FDL, then I felt like I needed a break, lol. I just docked at a nearby outpost, with 3.5 million in bounty claims and 74% hull left.

I personally prefer long hair. At least long enough that you can gently pull on it when, erm, 'appropriate'.
