This reminds me of a discussion in Deciat system chat last night. Someone asked where to find Vanadium. The response: Go visit the crystal shards, then trade down. Fun fact: Deciat 1 has 9.9% Vanadium. I doubt that traveling to the crystal shards beats a quick landing on a nearby planet to shoot a few rocks. This is the problem with guides: People follow them without thinking.

There is no best builds but recommended progression. It is up to you what you pick. There is also a section "other great ships" which gives good examples builds following the design process and a short description why they haven't made it to recommendated list.

Alphabetical list is also amusing. The two particular rows for AspS and Type-10.

Edit: The Vanadium story is a prime example of giving recommendation for a problem without context.
Yes, for someone who have max engineered ship and needs to max raw materials, crystalline shards is better solution than for one who just need few mats to level up engineering access in which case finding a nearby landable body with geological features and high deposit of the material with Eddb is more effective.

I didn’t mean I didn’t follow the guides at all, but that finding and succeeding is fun. May notice something that may not be the best and most effective but that one enjoys. For example, I find it fun to have an overcharged cannon - a high yield shell, not the best ,,, but

That's what I was trying to say

Trying different setups and tweaking them is probably the most fun part of ED. I feel sad for the people skipping that process to "git gud" quick. They're missing out.

The PvE wiki isn't bad, but some of its recommendations just don't work for me. For example, I have yaw on the keyboard, and that makes aiming fixed weapons very difficult. Therefore gimballed weapons on a faster ship like the Mamba serve me better than fixed ones on a slower ship with good convergence.

Gimbled weapons on Mamba are the right choice but because of its hardpoints convergence.

That's just a different way of saying, the Mamba is a bad choice because it sucks with fixed weapons.

Not exactly, you said that you suck at aiming because odd key binding choice. I’ve said that Mamba will sux with fixed weapon even if you are pro at aiming due to convergence.

Quick question - I have a 77Ly jump Anaconda (spent age getting there) but on my recent journey to colonia I didn’t jump beyond 68ly? My fuel is low so taking me to 74lyand wondering what is going on or if I am missing something? I appreciate that not every jump will be at the top end but especially when I get to the galactic centre I would assume the stars would allow for most of them to be 70+ ly jumps. Any advice? Thanks and much appreciated

Hm, maybe it is something with the route plotter. For Colonia I usually use neutron plotter and the jumps are usually almost the maximum range of FSD cone boost.

What stars are you plotting on O.B.A.F.G.M.K. or you skip M?

It's not odd, it's the default keybinding. Roll and pitch is on the mouse.

The route plotter always calculates with the jump range of a completely refueled ship. If you want to jump further, you have to plot manually.

any cargo or limpets ? 4c fueltank should be large enough. reduced jump range in galaxy map?

Yes, and a courier is perfect ship for mining. /s

Ahhh - that might be it - I have several spare fuel tanks for being in sparsely populated star systems on the rim but never fill them up unless I need to. I have always wondered if there was a way to switch off fuel tanks but couldn’t find one - som

I skip M but still wonder how there can’t be any stars further away than 68ly - someone else has commented that it may be the route planner plots my route with a full fuel tank (I have big ones for when I need them but dont fill them up).

Thanks and no limpets or cargo. I have spare fuel tanks that I don’t fill unless I am in a sparse area. I’ve been told the route plotter plans based on a full fuel tank so that might be it. Thanks for the comment.
