Sakashiroalmost every time I fly through a mailslot, there's a short stutter, as if the game is swapping textures into VRAM or whatever. It doesn't take long, but it's annoying because it happens just when I align my ship for the landing pad.

I’ve always had this in Horizon. Mostly at speed.
I’ve not had any fps problems in Odyssey. True it dips to 40 in some settlements but I can handle that. It’s the least of my issues.

My fps is usually 50-60. In conflict zones it drops to 25. I've noticed that on some planets (with more features such as stones and biologicals) around settlements the performance drops to unplayable 5-9 fps slideshow. Fires and scavengers can lead to additional performance drops. The game is poorly optimized - this is the truth. You can throw better hardware at it but you still risk performance drops in some situations on-foot, where a second flickering can lead to failure in whatever you doing.

Maybe, there are new improvements as an interface, but it needs some improvements but, the way they will.

Aye bit late on this but i had to do some shit in between, neway here's the vid of my CZ life.

I ain't saying shit can't be better (and the navmesh fixes are going to help, most of this perf shit is directly related to how much ai is on the field currently trying to find its next best path to a target - i know that pain from arma), but it's a far cry from anywhere near cyberpunk levels lmao come on, especially since i pump the engine for all the detail it can give. And if i step it down to high i get 10-15 fps more in both scenarios (at the same SS&SMAA combo). Medium sized CZ's are right in the middle of both, so around 70.

Oh yeah and in bases that aren't currently being hammered by AI and constant spawning of dropships, i get around 100-120, and about 2 1km away from it its back to a solid 120 - also the recording itself takes about 2 fps out of the average (i noticed the drop and increase while toggling the recordings). Btw, fire doesn't really affect fps at all in my case, so i have no idea what kind of goblins you got hiding in your PC heh.

So, you agree that performance is way out of what it must be or not? The fact that top spec PC can handle it but it is also struggling should tell you a lot. You haven't been in the worst case scenario but even in your video your FPS drops to 40 at a point.

The problem is not only the navmesh, surface features and the type of the buildings have a lot to add. For some reasons glass reflects light behind solid walls. For some reasons there are temporary performance drops - probably because textures loading or whatever as Sakashiro mentioned.

Don't get me wrong. It might be playable on your hardware but it is far from what it should be. The performance is totally unacceptable in the recommended specs or mid range hardware.

The 40 fps drops happen right when a bunch of new dropships spawn in, which again points to navmesh generation being a choke, if fdev isn't lying then the next patch should boost me up to over 60 stable, unless the inclusion of ships is going to offset those gains in which case here we go again.

Either way i don't really care about CZs much until they get some more interaction with other gameplay loops, i'd rather wait for thargoid ground combat than just kill bipeds all day long, and normal base gameplay works fine without all that CZ bloat, i visit them to pick up some ground and ship missions in the terminals, by which it would be nice if one could access both types from the same spot but i digress.

Exploring nice looking planets while in VR and hunting down pirates in belts is a nice diversion, but i'd rather get some juicy content than months of performance tweaks until horizon parity is gained (which will never happen, them ever stating it would was stupid, horizon is far too simplistic to be a serious performance target).

At the same time, drops to 2-5 fps don't sound right at all, and are most definitely caused by a concrete issue which will be found and fixed, that is way too low to be caused by something small and just hardware dependent.

Navmesh is related to on-foot NPCs. That bug was introduced with patch 6. It worked fine in patch 5 but back then you could of get NPCs stuck more often. If its performance is fixed the rendering problems will still remain.

Salmonea[quote=Aykutdnr]Do you currently recommend Odyssey?

yes... best selfie , and bar exploration addon to E:D.

Look at the kinds of 3 strip comics you can make! And the graphics are upgraded.

Horizons performs better because it's more "simplistic"?

How do you explain this?

I'm getting so tired of people making up excuses for FDev's display of utter incompetence. I'm not sure what exactly is going on at that company, but my guess is that all the experienced engineers have been purged and replaced with low-paid interns.

It is and the screenshot is completely unrelated to it (it's a different problem). But, it certainly doesn't excuse the bad performance Odyssey has.

Yeah, for me its more that watching backseat developers debate about what the problems are supposedly caused by when not even the actual programmers know for certain is at best tragically hilarious.

I'm more surprised that nobodies calling out the 'exploring nice looking planets in VR' line. You can't even do that in Oddity. Soon as you land and step pop out on foot your VR is just a lower resolution flat screen so what's the point? Imagine paying $5000 for a system just to experience this and being happy for the privilege . It's like buying a Lamborghini to drive in New York: "but these cupholders are awesome!"

Not on foot, but I think the SRV cockpit is still VR.

The "nice looking" part is debatable though. Since I switched back to Horizons I've noticed how completely smooth the landing experience is in comparison to Odyssey. There's no terrain popping in at all, no temporary loss of detail while getting closer. And of course the frame rate never drops below the VSYNC ceiling.

Horizons vs. Odyssey is like triple-A quality vs. "my first video game". If someone told me these two were made by the same team, I wouldn't believe it.

I guess that's what happens when you add in a completely different dynamic into an already existing, flushed out videogame. Not even sure why the two are compared to eachother, as if they were separate things. Odyssey is most definitely not a ground-up rebuilt version of ED, and that's most probably the reason why it performs so poorly.

The Hyford's Cashe story has been overtaken in galnet news by political discussions and an onionhead cg. If they were ever going to go back to lore development that was their chance. Time to pick out a new game.
