-Knight-I always use a docking computer with the bigger ships simply because it's too much of a pain to dock manually with them. Way too easy to get stuck. Haven't had a problem yet.

That's fair. I don't run ADCs often anymore, largely because I've made it a goal to park and pilot them myself. Pulling my Cutter into damaged stations for rescue ops for the first time was a game-changer for me. But, a Beluga with its tail would give me pause. If I end up buying one, I'll be sure to keep an ADC installed, even if powered down.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Your welcome! ^_^

EpisparhOh, that "interesting" game play? It is hard to believe that a small ship like dolphin cannot land anywhere in 5km radius.

mmmhhmmm. Although I said 1km^2, and yes, a Dolphin is one of a select few that would have the least number of landing issues. That number would still be >0 and when parking >1km away costs >2 minutes of running (one way)... Hence, my favourite Tremors 2 quote:

"When you need it, and don't got it, you sing a different tune".

Exobiology, Trading, and the niche role of BGS station updating for the faction are the only use cases I can think of where an ADS is reasonably worth it.

ADC is useful to get a feeling of where the eye level should be when going through mail slots. For Anaconda, it's very close to the ceiling while for a T-9 it's very low. Once you know that, you can turn the ADC off, and get rid of it entirely when you feel comfortable. Docking big ships manually is actually fun. Only the first few times are scary.

It's all lies. You white knuckle every time.

J/k.

I still don't get it 100% right, but it can be fun, especially in that "Holy shit, I just nailed it once after screwing up a million times" sort away. The no-shield-hit landing + no approach correction landings are still rather elusive for me, but I play E:D as my idle background game while paying more attention to audiobooks.

True, it was scary when I had to manually dock my Baluga for the first time.

Good thing you brought the Beluga?

During my entire pilot career I think I found only one Earth-like world that hadn't yet been discovered by someone else.

If you really care about the CG, I heard there's a tool that monitors your log files and alerts you whenever you pass through a system with an ELW. Because apparently the game logs all the planet types, whether you scan them or not. So you can increase your chances by spending more time on jumping and less on scanning.

Actually, my Asp Explorer since it has a 65 LY jump range.

Oy, I should have thought of that! Thanks for the tip! ^_^

Edited to add: But that tool isn't really useful to us console users since, to use it, I need a PC with Elite Dangerous installed.

I'll just look for K-class stars.

Definitely a great ship with excellent range! I'd try and sell you on the glory of Porpoisful Exploration, but you already know the glory that is Saud Kruger.

That's a thing I've learnt! Thanks!

I'd also add to focus your time on d-class boxel systems. IGAU swears by them, and I've nabbed more than a few that way myself. If you need any other tips, hit me up in PM. I'm going to assume you know the astronomy behind systems, but hit me up in PM if you'd like to discuss more.

Yeah, the boxel thing is interesting. If you're near the galactic core where star density is high, you can actually take funny pics of them, like these:

This video taught me how to look for interesting systems. Finding ELWs isn't hard, but unless you're really far out, undiscovered ones are rare.

It does feel a bit weird agreeing with you on that, given we're something like 0.01% of full exploration of the systems in galaxy, according to EDSM. However, it's not random that our experiences are the same. We use the same plotter as everyone else. You almost have to go out of your way to break it to make it work for you. Like ignoring stars that are too big, too small, or just plain exotic.

I've never used auto-docking for any ship, but then I have a HOTAS setup so it is a bit easier imo.
24 Sep 2021, 10:40pm
Yeah, being a keyboard Neanderthal, I can't thrust vector and change orientation simultaneously. HOTAS would fix the problem for sure.
