Look down on me all you want for being a noob with lots of hours sunk into this game, but that video up above blew my mind.

Nah, it's a video that's very dense in information. And, he's right. I've only learnt most of the video through being with IGAU for almost 9 months when I first started the game. Outside of them, I've seen very few share info. in detail about boxel nomenclature, for example. He doesn't explain everything into minutia, but you don't really need it all, unless you're trying to map a boxel systematically. Here's a bit more in detail. It's easy to get lost in the sea, and the hexidecimal math isn't hard, but it feels like it requires a rewrite of your brain.

August DavenportI'd also add to focus your time on d-class boxel systems. IGAU swears by them, and I've nabbed more than a few that way myself. If you need any other tips, hit me up in PM. I'm going to assume you know the astronomy behind systems, but hit me up in PM if you'd like to discuss more.

Yeah, the boxel thing is interesting. If you're near the galactic core where star density is high, you can actually take funny pics of them, like these:

This video taught me how to look for interesting systems. Finding ELWs isn't hard, but unless you're really far out, undiscovered ones are rare.

You see this a lot on the way from the Bubble to Colonia. One mechanic that I actually like in ED is that if you pick a star, it gets closer as you fly towards it. Nebulas included.

-Knight-I always use a docking computer with the bigger ships simply because it's too much of a pain to dock manually with them. Way too easy to get stuck. Haven't had a problem yet.

ADC is useful to get a feeling of where the eye level should be when going through mail slots. For Anaconda, it's very close to the ceiling while for a T-9 it's very low. Once you know that, you can turn the ADC off, and get rid of it entirely when you feel comfortable. Docking big ships manually is actually fun. Only the first few times are scary.

It's no fun having to dock an Imperial Cutter manually.

PREACH! Especially when it's overheating and getting jostled by explosions.

I'm glad I'm not alone.

Last night I started making myself familiar with the in-game market data tools. My goal is to get good at trading without relying on Inara.

-Knight-All I'm finding is water worlds...

During my entire pilot career I think I found only one Earth-like world that hadn't yet been discovered by someone else.

If you really care about the CG, I heard there's a tool that monitors your log files and alerts you whenever you pass through a system with an ELW. Because apparently the game logs all the planet types, whether you scan them or not. So you can increase your chances by spending more time on jumping and less on scanning.

What's the name of the tool? I'm interested in trying it out.

Elite Observatory.

For those interested, I have a custom criteria file that is extremely helpful for denoting high value targets for scanning. I used to use that back when I did more exploration as it calls out the planets with highest payouts, as well as planets that have best highest mineral content for prospecting while in the black.

Thank you this. I'll download and try it. Thanks again.

Alternatively EDDI and ED Scout both inform the user of high value systems and may be more to your liking (one is a voice interface, the other an Exploration ui that can send the system list to other devices on your network)

Great. Thank you. These tools will prove useful I think.

Can someone please explain to me the purpose of those wing "source & return" missions where the reward is below the market value of the goods to be sourced? For example, a station pays 50,000,000 Cr mission reward for 1,500 units of gold, but the commodities market at the same station pays 56,039 Cr * 1,500 = 84,058,500 Cr. Is there any benefit in accepting the mission instead of selling to the market directly?

Are you talking about mission board missions? I've seen a couple like that, but not specifically named as "Source & Return".

they are Wing missions.
2 people sharing the mission would each get 50million = a minimum expected payout of 100million by the station. Additionally, your premise that a mission should pay more than straight trading is flawed: Mission rewards include 'intangibles' like faction rep and influence. You're doing them for the clout and not just to pay the bills.

That said, I've been critical of the games economic design from the start. Very little thought is given to any sense of balance, it doesn't use actual supply and actual demand, and as broad as the tradable goods list is it is way short of what it should be (most of the raw engineering mats should actually be tangible goods. Why are we burning iron for the FSD when it would be actually used to build stations...). In the end, it's a game. You want a thing to do, the board gives you that thing. Any thinking beyond that is pointless anymore.
