QuillmonkeyAccording to my investigation, the most agile+thermally efficient ship to use for exploration is the dolphin, closely followed by Asp Scout.

Can confirm on both counts for the Dolphin. You can be scooping and charging your next FSD jump happily while your heatsinks collect dust. The agility it has is almost twitchy, even in supercruise.

Asp Scout flies well enough but it has been panned as a ship choice for a reason.

Scout is a medium ship compared to the Dolphin's small footprint.
And considering the ASPS is a medium, why are its optional slots so bad? Almost every option on the Dolphin beats it.

I'm not sure how accurate this is these days, but I decided on an engineered Phantom with a 6A scoop and SRV for those looooooong away travels. The thing goes from half a tank to full in seconds.

That's why I dislike the DBX. Its jump range is great but scooping slows it down. Dolphin, Phantom, AspX are great exploration ships because they can equip scoops that are bigger than the FSD.

I highly recommend the Phantom, although with all the landing to look at pretty flowers, something with a smaller footprint may help.

I would say the Dolphin is a good second choice, but I flippin hate Saud Kruger.

Yeah, I love my ASPS really nifty in gravity. turns on a pin and can land almost anywhere. Limited optionals but don't need anything else.
Still use my dolphin 90% of the time tho. I carry empty cargo bays so I can turn off the FSD booster and limit my jump range to around 35-42ly which I find best suits my explorer style. If I need more, I turn on the FSD and lower the cargo allowance in the map. Give me 55ly.

Yeah, Phantom took me to Elite but not used it since. I just don't have the need for long jumps.

Back to the original question tho. What is the thinking on pips increasing pitch and speed but having no effect on roll and yaw. They use the same engine mechanics, don't they?

I'll do it when they actually go woo and poo!

Jiirneven with 5.6 tons of hardpoints a LW ship of any kind is completely one-hit by any fed ship which can and probably will out-tank your conda. maybe you can slag some imperial lights but you won't outrun any of them. an 82 LY conda running undisturbed outside the new colonia bridge is realistic. i haven't charted the bridge to know whether to go up, down or flank, but i always do one of those to get some discoveries in my name along the way.

the integrity of the moduls goes down thats true but you can fight with them, i had a fight with a chieftain and a fdl in deepspace and they lost. yes you need a afm unit after battle but it´s not so much damage, after both fights there where some weapon banks down, true. more ly´s are welcome but collecting all the way datas costs very much time.. explorations i didn´t want to lose in a fight couse i can´t fight back (with no wapons installed) or even run away (to slow).. so the thoughts of that lightweight weapon bank is only for defence in some kind of situations. for me the 5,6 t are it resists to get with me.. btw. with shorter jump range there is more stuff for exploration..

ps: i found many untouched systems.. some of them have realy fanstatic hotspots, in one system i found an 4 point overlapping hot spot, grinding never was so efficent..
and it´s not so far from the bubble.. three or four water world systems in deeper space complety carrying my name

reboot/repair is a pretty awesome and free AFM+shield bank, though for exploring you do need a class 1 handy for your FSD to keep your neutron surfing predictable above 80%. I always erred on the side of too much AFM, though it is weightless i haven't needed more than a fraction of the capcity.

what was once cool with the conda was that you know only one ship build could have reached certain far-apart strands at the edge. if you stay on top of your fuel and jump spectrum you get to know the names of those who have done likewise. at this point there's a shortcut for everything using a carrier or a pre-eng FSD to appeal to wider audiences and now the Colonia Bridge (I only recently picked the game back up)

same thoughts about the afm units.. my first trips to deeper space i took to many with me too, your right, never needed so much, one or maybe two is enough for me atm. maybe in deeper space more are helpfull.. btw. first trips i choose the conda, was a real nice feeling exploring so much unknown space, 5000ly this direction, than 8000ly there and another 5000ly back to the bubble.. my first outbubble trip

on the way to colonia i tried something new.. lightweight was one thing.. i installed the largest possible fuel tank. now i can jump a bit over 1000ly without refuiling.. just for testing. also installed a fuelscope. and farer you jump more jump range is gaining. you tank will drain step by step.. so with each jump you gain more jump range couse you getting lighter. only had to refuel a few times on the way to colonia.

I'm not sure if they are still active, but having the DSSA at your disposal for long trips out to the black means that the AFM is taking up a spot that's not needed.

True, but being self sufficient is still the best policy out in the black. And AMFU’s are weightless, as far as jump range is concerned at least.

For a really long trip I'd put AFMUs into any unoccupied slot. You don't really need more than one (because rebooting can put even a destroyed AFMU back into service), but this way you can store more AFMU ammo and won't need to spend materials on synthesis early on.

the dssa seems to be a great network, will check that out on my backway to bubble next weeks.. thanks for the hint

Hunt scouts in vulture with modified shard cannons and FA OFF is really fun!
