DescartesI'm sure that this must have been asked and answered before, but how do I increase my novice rank for combat?

Also, how do I earn the combat vouchers required to unlock engineers?

If you want to increase your rank quickly, go to a high resource extraction site that you find in many ringed planets. When you drop in. checkout the ships that are not authority ships. if you see anything bigger than an Asp, log until you see only small ships, then help the police to shoot theem. Using a sidewinder, none will shoot back at you if you only shoot at the ships that the police are already shooting. When you have 20+million cr, get a Vulture like this and have some fun:

If you only want to unlock the engineer, drop out at the nav beacon next to the star in any system and wait for the police to start shooting the bad guys (show as "wanted"), then join in with them.

If you want combat bonds for the other engineer. you get the fastest ship you can with the best sensors and go to a conflict zone that you'll find in any system at war. When you drop out at the CZ, you go towards the centre and a message will appear in your comms telling you to pick a side. Once you pick one, all the ships go red or green. You have to kill the red ones. the idea is to hang around at the edge, keep scanning all the red ones until you see one with a low hull, then dash in, finish it off and dash back to the edge. Use your radar to make sure that no unengaged reds get behind you because that's where they attack you from unless you shoot them first. Once they start shooting at you, they don't give up, so jump out of the CZ, then jump back in and start again. A Viper or Imperial Courrier work quite well. I can't over-emphasise the importance of speed.

ArtieIn English, guys, please (even Google translator is good enough). There are also other commanders that may provide answers, advices or simply want to understand what it is about without translating it all the time. Thanks.

My apologies Artie and to all. No disrespect was intended. O7

This sir, is the best way to make the game unappealing as quick as possible! I will never, ever understand why some people play this way. They harm themvelves.. There are thousands way to play the game, but so many people somehow end up on the same rails. It's a pity.

What really matters is not the goal, but the experience you have while you reach it.

There is a lot of wisdom in this, but some folks like to set goals for achievements, it’s playing the game their way. Each to their own.

Ideally you can have both ways, sadly not all games do a very good job at this balance.

Thank you for all your answers. Enough suggestions there to suit various styles of play.

I like to play the game as I find it. Too many short-cuts, e.g. log/relog, seem to defeat the object and spoil it for me. And playing with one purpose in mind, e.g. just gaining rank, gets very boring very quickly.

I'm surprised I was pinged for this. Much appreciated for the theories.
This gives me inspiration to go a certain direction once I am ready to find some Thargoids.

a) If the system has a Thargoid presence, you may find any type of Thargoids there.
b) Medusas are punchbags.

ok...Ive got my ship ready (far as i can tell) to go find/fight the Thargoid scouts. now, i know to look for Threat 3/4 non-human sources to find scouts but where do i go to find the threat? Just pop out to one of the incursion systems? That seems to risk putting me in the sights of a lot more dangerous Interceptors.
